Duke’s men’s basketball players have been witnessing their dreams come true this year. Cooper Flagg was drafted No. 1 by the Dallas Mavericks, and his former Duke teammate followed just three slots later.
Here’s a closer look at the Charlotte Hornets’ draft selection, a move that adds another piece to their youthful offensive foundation.
Charlotte Hornets Select Kon Knueppel, Cooper Flagg’s Duke Teammate, at No. 4
Kon Knueppel was drafted No. 4 by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2025 NBA Draft. Knueppel is the highest-ever pick from Wisconsin, surpassing Devin Harris, who went fifth overall in the 2004 NBA Draft.
Just one season at Duke was enough for Knueppel to cement his status as one of the best talents in basketball this year. He stepped into the Duke lineup during Flagg’s ankle injury in the ACC tournament. With Flagg sidelined, Knueppel led the charge for Duke and helped them win the tournament. He also won the MVP award at the ACC tournament, which is no ordinary feat.
The former Blue Devils guard averaged 14.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and one steal per game across 39 outings for Duke. He also shot an impressive 40.6% from beyond the three-point line, meaning his shooting prowess will surely be a boost for the Hornets.
That’s exactly what the Hornets have been lacking as they struggled to break down teams from distance. Knueppel will offer a consistent option from deep alongside LaMelo Ball.
In addition to his sharpshooting, Knueppel is also capable of driving toward the rim. He can get into the lane to get his own shot or create plays for teammates, which could be a great fit with Ball. He’s expected to contribute massively to the Hornets as a floor spacer, a role he’s well suited for.

When NBA commissioner Adam Silver called Knueppel’s name at No. 4, Flagg paused his interview for a few seconds in a wholesome display of raw emotion for his Duke friend. He also said he loved it for Knueppel, who was his teammate last year in college.
Knueppel will now be under great pressure to perform, but might be at ease on a young, long-term roster with the likes of Ball and Brandon Miller. Charles Lee heads the team as coach, and his championship-winning experience as an assistant coach will surely help these young players learn a thing or two about the NBA.
