Toni Nadal Explains Key Difference Between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in Big Moments

According to Toni Nadal, this dramatic match showcased the mental differences between the two players. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Toni Nadal outlined the main factor holding Jannik Sinner back, saying, “I think the Spaniard is mentally a little superior in the decisive moments, while the Italian is better at imposing a very high pace without making mistakes.”

The 2025 French Open final saw Sinner hold a commanding two-set lead along with three championship points at 5-3 in the fourth set, before Alcaraz saved all three match points and went on to win the match in five sets.

Lasting for five hours and 29 minutes, this clash was the longest final in Roland Garros history.

This clash was the longest final in Roland Garros history at five hours and 29 minutes. Besides the mental aspect, Toni also highlighted specific technical areas where the World No. 1 could enhance his game.

Toni felt that Sinner’s drop shot technique needs work compared to Alcaraz, who, according to Andy Roddick, is the best drop shot player in tennis history. The Spaniard wins 60 percent of points when he plays a drop shot, the highest percentage on the ATP Tour.

“He could be more precise in the drop shots, and sometimes he is a bit in a hurry,” Toni said.

This pattern of Alcaraz outperforming his rival is slowly becoming a frequent feature in recent years. While the Italian excels at maintaining a high pace without errors, his aggressive style can sometimes backfire in crucial situations.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, shows tactical variety and adaptability, using slice shots, volleys, and different court positions more effectively.

While underlining the small yet vital differences giving Alcaraz the edge, Toni said that Sinner had the scope to polish his game and match his rival better. “Everyone can do better; even Federer perfected his backhand. Jannik will continue to add small details, to evolve.”
