A heated moment took center stage at the 2025 Eastbourne Open when a questionable line call during the first-round clash between rising Brazilian star Joao Fonseca and Belgium’s Zizou Bergs sparked debate.
The drama unfolded in a tight opening-set tiebreak, where an apparent error by the electronic line-calling system left players visibly confused and the crowd buzzing. Although Bergs took the first-set breaker 10-8, the controversy over a crucial shot called out, despite replay evidence showing it landed in, overshadowed the early stages of the match.
João Fonseca and Zizou Bergs Caught in Line-Call Controversy at Crucial Tiebreak Moment
It marked the first time the two players faced each other on the ATP Tour and also served as their main draw debut at the ATP 250 tournament. The controversy erupted at 6-6 in the first-set tiebreak when Bergs struck a deep inside-out forehand that painted the sideline, at least, according to the replay shown on the stadium screen.
The electronic call, however, ruled the shot out. As both players paused to assess the decision, the scoreboard and screen displayed an image indicating the ball had clipped the line. Chair umpire Greg Allensworth contacted the video team for clarification, but after a brief delay, the original call stood.

No override was issued, despite the image visibly contradicting the out call. The crowd murmured in disbelief, with even Bergs gesturing in frustration at the inconsistency. Still, Bergs managed to reset his focus and eventually claimed the breaker 10-8.
Wow.
A ELC error at 7-6 in the tiebreak.

7-6 in Bergs/Fonseca TB – Zizou hits a deep inside-out FH, thinks he made it but the system calls it wide. However, on the screen they show it was in (visible to the players). Allensworth contacted the video team and they deemed the out call stands. Mess, but Bergs still won 10-8

But the momentum didn’t last. Fonseca, unfazed by the early drama, stormed back to dominate the next two sets 6-0, 6-3 and secure his place in the second round.
All Eyes on Fonseca’s Next Battle on the Court
Fonseca is set to face top seed Taylor Fritz in the second round, marking their first-ever ATP Tour encounter. Fritz is set to make his main draw debut at the tournament, following a first-round exit at the Queen’s Club Championships against Corentin Moutet.
The winner will advance to the quarterfinals, where they will meet either the winner of Luciano Darderi vs. Marcos Giron or the one who emerges from Jacob Fearnley vs. the fifth seed, Flavio Coboli.
