Paula Badosa Vents Her Frustration on Racket After Injury Forces Early Retirement in Berlin

Badosa’s confident run at the Berlin Open met an unexpected end after she was forced to retire because of an injury mid-match. The Chinese player started picking up pace as soon as the showdown kicked off, attaining a 6-1 lead. This was when the Spaniard started feeling uncomfortable and therefore gestured towards the chair umpire to call it off.

However, the unexpected injury quickly turned into rage as she smashed her racket on the ground several times. Soon after sharing a customary handshake with her rival, the 27-year-old lost control over her emotions and vented it all out on her racket. After smashing her racket on the floor, she also threw it away before walking out of the Steffi Graf Stadion.

Badosa reached the quarterfinals of the Berlin Tennis Open after a commendable second-round win over Emma Navarro. However, despite the dominant form, the unexpected illness stopped her from securing a spot in the top four.

Starting from the qualifiers, Xinyu secured five back-to-back wins (including one over Coco Gauff) to confirm her entry into the semifinals of the WTA 500 event.

Paula Badosa Expresses Disappointment Over the Unexpected End to Her Berlin Campaign

While fans were eagerly waiting for an update on Badosa’s situation after her abrupt retirement, she stepped forward to express her feelings, mentioning that she has finally grown tired of the recurring health issues that also hinder her performance.

“I’m so tired of this,” she wrote, along with a broken heart emoji.

Badosa has been fighting a chronic lower‐back injury that was first reported in 2023. The persistent pain in her L4 vertebra forced the Spaniard to retire mid‑match in Mérida and again in Miami. This was followed by abrupt withdrawals from Indian Wells, the Charleston Open, Mutua Madrid Open and the Italian Open.

With Wimbledon down the line, it still remains to be seen if the WTA star gets herself ready to face the unexpected set of challenges, starting from 30th June.
