Carlos Alcaraz Reveals Reason for His Argument With Chair Umpire at Queen’s Club Championships 2025

Top seeded at the 2025 Queen’s Club Championships, Alcaraz began his campaign by defeating lucky loser Adam Walton 6-4, 7-6(4) in the first round, followed by a win against compatriot Jaume Munar, 6-4, 6-7(7), 7-5.

During his match against Munar, Alcaraz was seen in a heated argument with the chair umpire, expressing his frustration with the speed of the shot clock.

In the post-match press conference, Alcaraz clarified the situation, explaining that due to the extreme heat, prolonged rallies, and lengthy games, he felt he had no time to recover between points and was constantly in a “rush.”

“It was a really long match. The conditions today was extreme with the heat. It was really, really hot out there, and yeah, really long rallies, long games. I felt like I had no time to recover between points. I was in a rush all the time,” Alcaraz said.

The former World No. 1 mentioned that he was unable to prepare properly for the next point because of this pressure.

“So it was kind of I can’t approach the next point in appropriate way. I mean, that talk with the umpire, it wasn’t because of that I didn’t lose the focus, but it was a problem all the time with all the clock,” he continued.

Alcaraz added that his opponent, Munar also raised similar concerns to the chair umpire. He mentioned that the shot clock rule should be revised to allow players to have more time to adequately prepare for the next point.

“Jaume talked to the umpire with the same thing. They have to change that. But yeah, I mean, they have to know where to put the clock, you know, right after the point or wait a little bit, because after long points, long rallies, I finish the point at the net, I should have a little bit more of time just to approach the next point in a proper way. That’s what I felt today,” he added.

Previewing Alcaraz’s Quarterfinal Match Up at Queen’s Club Championships 2025

Following his victory over Munar in the second round of the 2025 Queen’s Club Championships, Alcaraz is set to face Arthur Rinderknech in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

In the qualifiers, Rinderknech defeated Johannus Monday 7-6(2), 7-6(2) in the first round. before losing 3-6, 6-3, 5-7 to Corentin Moutet in the next round. Despite this loss, Rinderknech earned his spot in the main draw as a lucky loser.

In the first round of the main draw, Rinderknech secured a win against sixth seed Ben Shelton, 7-6(5), 7-6(4). The Frenchman then followed that up with a 7-5, 7-6(3) victory over Reilly Opelka to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will take on Alcaraz.

Alcaraz and Rinderknech have faced each other twice on the ATP Tour, with the Spaniard winning both encounters. Their most recent match-up took place in the first round of the 2023 Queen’s Club Championships, where Alcaraz triumphed 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(3). Following that match, the former World No. 1 went on to defeat De Minaur and claim the title.
