Jannik Sinner Opens Up About His Early Exit at the Halle Open

The Terra Wortmann Open’s defending champion, Jannik Sinner, faced an unexpected 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 defeat to Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the second round. The loss marked Sinner’s first one to a player ranked outside the world’s top two since August 2024 and his worst defeat by ranking since August 2023.

Sinner took a moment to express his thoughts about realising that his massive 66-match win streak against opponents ranked outside the top 20 finally came to an end. The 23-year-old mentioned how Bublik’s strength surged in the opening set itself. He also admitted to having missed out on the chances he received in the second set.

“I think I definitely had my chances in the second set. In the first set, I really felt like I was in the rally playing each shot and trying to stay focused, but I ended up missing the backhand, which was disappointing. Honestly, when I think about today’s match, it really came down to two or three points that ended up going Sascha’s way instead, and that small difference was what ultimately made the difference in the end,” he said.

Despite the loss, he expressed satisfaction over being a part of the competition. He also drew connections with his recent loss to Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros, making it clear that he still isn’t over it.

“I tried everything after the long matches in Roland Garros, I know that, right away. All things considered, I’m relatively satisfied. Two matches are nice, I enjoyed playing them ofcourse, better if there were more matches to participate in. But it’s okay as it is. I need to take some time to recover mentally and physically so I can regain my strength,” he added.

Alexander Bublik Deems Victory Over Sinner an ‘Accomplishment’

After ending Sinner’s massive win streak at the Halle Open, Bublik stepped forward to express his excitement over the win. In a post-match interview, the 28-year-old mentioned the stiffness he experienced throughout the match, along with citing it as a major accomplishment in his career so far.

“We are tennis players and we try to win every match we play, but it is a special one. I had never beaten a No. 1 in the world. It is an accomplishment. I kept serving. I tried to be clutch. I tried to get back whatever I [could]. He is an unbelievable player, and I was not thinking that I could beat him. But I had a few chances and executed them well. I kept serving. I had better chances than at Roland Garros,” he said.

After the win, Bublik will now prepare to compete against the Czech player Tomáš Macháč in the quarterfinal showdown scheduled for Friday, June 20.
