With NFL teams scoring more points than ever before, Aaron Rodgers will continue his lengthy career in Pittsburgh. After months of speculation, the Steelers have found their quarterback. Rodgers will look to lead the Steelers to the playoffs once again, with the team setting its aspirations higher than usual. That said, there is one glaring issue that cannot be forgotten.
The Steelers’ Receiving Depth Remains an Issue
No matter how much experience Rodgers has, he can’t recover from a receiving group with little to no experience. DK Metcalf is one thing, but Ben Skowronek and Scotty Miller are another.
Robert Woods and Calvin Austin round out a receiving core that includes rookie Roman Wilson, the Steelers’ No. 84 pick in the 2024 draft.

With injuries remaining an issue, Rodgers will have Jaylen Warren in the backfield and Pat Friermuth as his reliable tight end. NFL insider Mike DeFabo mentioned, “Receiver feels like the thinnest position group, even if there are some intriguing depth pieces.”
He added, “I still worry about a potential Metcalf injury. We saw what happened last year when Pickens got hurt. His absence coincided with the late-season spiral. I’m not sure the Steelers are in a better position to deal with a prolonged absence of the No. 1 WR.”
Metcalf will join Rodgers as first-timers in Pittsburgh as the Steelers’ offense will look quite different in the 2025 season. The 27-year-old receiver was eight yards shy of 1,000 last season, after surpassing the amount in three of his previous four seasons. Having played just 15 games last year, the former Seattle Seahawks finished the 2024 season with a career low of five receiving touchdowns.
Woods is 33 and will play on his fourth team in the last five seasons. His last few seasons have proven that he’s no longer a top receiver, but he can add some depth to a team that lacks experience. After beginning his career in Buffalo, Woods has played for the Bills, the Los Angeles Rams, the Tennessee Titans, and the Houston Texans. The USC graduate finished with just 203 yards last season.
Other than a pair of seasons in 2018-19, Woods hasn’t surpassed 1,000 since. In his past four seasons, he didn’t even come close. Rodgers will have to rely on Calvin Austin III, who had the opposite of a sophomore slump last season. The 26-year-old hauled in 36 receptions for 548 yards. He has five career receiving touchdowns, increasing his yards per catch from 10.6 to 15.2 last season.
Rodgers put up some solid numbers last season, even though he didn’t lead the New York Jets to the promised land. With a change in scenery, Rodgers will look to continue his Hall of Fame career as he tries to lead the team he beat in the Super Bowl to one of their own.
