2026 3-Star Corner Justin Lewis Opens Up About UCLA Offer, Emotional Return to Westwood

Three-star DB Justin Lewis flips from North Carolina to UCLA, sharing the emotional story behind his return to Westwood.

When 2026 three-star corner Justin Lewis made his way to Westwood for what was supposed to be a routine visit, the three-star defensive back from Rancho Cucamonga, California, had no idea his football future would completely change.

The UCLA Bruins had extended an unexpected offer during a 7v7 tournament, and within days, Lewis found himself decommitting from North Carolina and embracing the hometown blue and gold.

Justin Lewis Speaks About Recruiting Journey With UCLA

Justin Lewis’s commitment flip story reads like a modern recruiting fairy tale, complete with family atmosphere, emotional connections, and the magnetic pull of playing close to home.

Originally committed to North Carolina since late January under the guidance of legendary coach Bill Belichick, Lewis seemed destined for Chapel Hill. But fate had other plans when UCLA’s coaching staff spotted him during a high school tournament in Westwood.

UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster and his assistants have been the masterminds behind the recruiting maze since taking charge of the team in February 2024.

A 6’2″, 165-pound cornerback in his class, Lewis became the 11th commitment to UCLA for 2025. The Bruins’ recruitment classes of the past have faced a series of restrictions, and therefore, the outstanding success of this class, ranked 22nd nationally according to 247Sports, is high praise.

“The visit was great, the love was felt all weekend,” Lewis told Bruin Blitz on Sunday afternoon, capturing what swayed his decision. Accompanied by his father, mother, and brother, Lewis experienced what he described as a “warm, family-like atmosphere” that created lasting connections with the coaching staff.

The recruiting visit group even had the opportunity to meet comedic actor Adam Sandler, adding an unexpected Hollywood touch to the weekend.

Lewis’ flip is not an isolated case but a manifestation of the overall trends in college football recruitment. UCLA’s recruitment strategy, which focused on local players, has been most fruitful, as Coach Foster’s team brought thirteen California recruits to the 2025 class alone.

The Rose Bowl’s welcoming history supports UCLA’s recruiting efforts. The venue of thousands of Bruins games has been a stadium only in name; its real purpose has been a recruiting tool.

Lewis’s commitment represents more than another recruiting victory; it symbolizes UCLA’s renewed commitment to building relationships and creating genuine connections with prospects and their families.

As the Bruins head into Year 2 in the Big Ten, their recruiting efforts have been outstanding. Now, time will tell if that translates into on-field success.
