The college football world exploded excitedly when the South Carolina Gamecocks signed five-star wide receiver Nyck Harbor as a part of their 2024 class. The Washington, DC native is one of the fastest players in the country, clocking in a whopping 10.28 100-meter time in 2022.
There’s no denying Harbor’s athletic prowess, but the young wideout has not received much playing time in his two years with the Gamecocks. While South Carolina fans were hoping for a breakout in 2025, one analyst says that Harbor still struggles to find his football footing heading into his junior season.
Nyck Harbor Drawing Criticism From Analyst Heading into His Junior Year
On 247Sport’s “Ultimate College Football Show,” analysts Tom Loy, Smoke Dixon, and Brad Crawford reviewed the outlook heading into South Carolina’s 2025 season.
The development of Harbor was brought, and Dixon, a former Gamecock, sounded off, saying, “What has he done? He’s a fast guy, he’s a height, weight, speed guy. So if you’re going off what a reciever looks like coming off the bus, that’s who you’re taking. But when you study his play in terms of being a route runner, reliable strong hands, and understanding how to play the game of football, he’s not there yet.”
There’s no question that Harbor has all the tools, talent, and athleticism to become an elite wide receiver. Still, throughout his career at South Carolina, there has been little development in the nuances and technical aspects of playing the position.
To be brutally honest, if Harbor were ready for a large target share in the SEC, he’d be on the field. But that has not been the case in his young career.
In two seasons with the Gamecocks, Harbor has caught 38 passes for 571 yards and four touchdowns. These aren’t bad numbers by any means, but not the kind of production South Carolina was hoping to get out of a guy who was ranked as the 15th best player in the country.

The sky’s truly the limit for Harbor’s potential, and he has all the talent in the world, but as of right now, he hasn’t reached it, and it sounds like heading into 2025, nothing has changed.
While predictions can be based on sound analysis, they are still only predictions, and time will tell if Harbor can turn his football career around. College football fans have been waiting to see Harbor dominate for two seasons now, and maybe he can figure it out during his junior season.
