Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh Makes Feelings Clear on ‘Humble and Hungry’ Omarion Hampton Ahead of RB’s Rookie Season

After spending weeks observing standout rookie Omarion Hampton, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh speaks about his feelings on the running back.

The Los Angeles Chargers are getting their first look at this year’s roster assembled following a disappointing postseason exit. As such, head coach Jim Harbaugh will get to see everyone in person after spending the offseason watching tape and staring at names on paper.

Seeing an assembled roster can change some opinions or reinforce others. The head coach recently spoke about his strong impressions of arguably the team’s biggest offseason addition.

Jim Harbaugh Declares Whether Omarion Hampton Is NFL-Ready

Speaking on the June 9th edition of the “Pat McAfee Show,” the Chargers head coach spoke about his impressions of rookie running back Omarion Hampton.

“Omarion Hampton, we’ve talked about what we’re looking for out of the young guys,” Harbaugh said. “I mean, people [that] are going to help us and are humble and hungry. Omarion’s that, and you know what I like about him the best is he’s really put together, he is trained, and he just looks NFL ready, [I] love how he hits a hole. I know we’re just in shorts and no pads yet, but I know that personality because I’ve seen it on tape from him.”

Of course, the endorsement carries weight, but anything less than praise would have set off red flags. If Harbaugh had a negative review, it might look like he made a mistake by having a hand in selecting the running back.

Considering the praise, Harbaugh’s new running back appears to be performing at least at an acceptable level. That said, plenty of players have put together impressive summers only to struggle in live action.

Hampton Headlines Chargers Offensive Makeover in 2025 Draft

The Chargers drafted Hampton with their first-round pick in the 2025 draft. So, there will be plenty of pressure on the rookie to perform this year.

But he’s not alone. The entire rookie draft class on the offensive side of the ball faces high expectations to bring change to the offense’s performance this season.

The Chargers finished 17th in PFSN’s Offense+ metrics, leaving plenty of room for improvement. The team attempted to foster change heavily during the NFL Draft, taking five offensive players in their first seven picks.

Harbaugh is still in the process of sculpting the team to fit his overarching plan. After a successful rebound in 2024, fans have little reason to doubt the coach coming through again. Of course, he will need to first keep pace in the likely tough-as-nails AFC West.

Will Harbaugh and his Chargers sprint towards new heights, or will the moves made in the 2025 NFL Draft leave them running into a ceiling?
