Quarterbacks to Target in Fantasy Football Drafts
Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Somehow, Baker Mayfield is still underrated. It’s surprising, especially since fantasy managers usually give No. 1 overall picks a long leash. It’s like people decided he shouldn’t be this good. But why not?
Mayfield went No. 1 overall in 2018 to the winless Browns, averaging 17.1 fantasy points per game as a rookie. He did struggle after that, but the promise he showed early didn’t just disappear.
Mayfield averaged a career-best 21.5 fantasy points per game last season. He might not hit that again — he’s not a runner, and we can’t count on 40+ touchdowns — but he’s clearly a QB1. And his team just added another talented pass catcher in first-rounder Emeka Egbuka.
Drake Maye, New England Patriots
The 2024 quarterback class has a chance to go down as the greatest of all time. Not only did it set a record with six QBs in the first round, but all six are starting this year.
Drake Maye was understandably overshadowed by Jayden Daniels having one of the greatest rookie seasons in NFL history, Caleb Williams being the top pick and featured on “Hard Knocks,” and Bo Nix leading the Broncos to the playoffs along with Daniels. Of the top three picks, Maye was the only one not to start immediately.
This has created a value proposition for Maye heading into 2025 fantasy drafts, at least for now. There are a lot of quarterbacks with 20 ppg upside. As a result, Maye likely won’t be taken inside the top 12. But he can absolutely give us a QB1 season.
One of the best plays of the NFL season that nobody talks about.

Maye’s 13.6 ppg average is fake. It includes the 2.1 points he scored when he made his NFL debut in Week 3 for only a handful of plays, as well as his 0 points in Week 18 when he played just three snaps. If we remove those outliers and look at Weeks 6-17, Maye posted 16.8 ppg, which is much more respectable.
This year, the Patriots added reliable veteran WR Stefon Diggs, rookie third-rounder Kyle Williams, and a receiving back in TreVeyon Henderson. Maye is also another year older and has an experienced, competent head coach. Plus, former Patriots offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels is back in the head coaching position.
With his rushing ability raising his floor, Maye may go higher than most would anticipate in fantasy drafts this year.
