Frances Tiafoe expressed his frustration regarding the decision not to default Lorenzo Musetti after the Italian unintentionally struck a line judge with a ball during their quarterfinal match at the 2025 French Open.
This quarterfinal clash at the clay-court Major marked the sixth meeting between Tiafoe and Musetti on the ATP Tour, with the World No. 7 improving his head-to-head record against Tiafoe to three wins and three losses.
Frances Tiafoe Gives His Thoughts on Lorenzo Musetti Incident
Seeded 15th at the French Open, Tiafoe defeated the likes of Roman Safiullin, Pablo Carreño Busta, 23rd seed Sebastian Korda, and Daniel Altmaier in the first four rounds to advance to the quarterfinals, where he faced Musetti and lost 2-6, 6-4, 5-7, 2-6.
During the second set of the last eight match, Musetti received a few balls from a ball kid, but while attempting to return one of the balls, he accidentally struck a line judge. However, Musetti was not penalized for the incident and was allowed to continue to play.
During the post-match press conference, Tiafoe voiced his disappointment over the lack of consequences for Musetti, describing the situation as both “comical” and inconsistent with the rules of the game.
“Yeah, I mean, obviously he did that and nothing happened. I think that’s comical, but it is what it is. Nothing happened, so there’s nothing really to talk about. Obviously it’s not consistent, so it is what it is,” Frances Tiafoe said.
Musetti on Unintentionally Hitting the Line Judge at French Open 2025
Following his win over Tiafoe in the quarterfinals of the 2025 French Open, Musetti addressed the controversial incident.
“Honestly it was really an unlucky coincidence. I was a little bit honestly scared because I really didn’t want to harm nobody of course. So I immediately went to the line umpire and of course, said sorry and I apologized to to everyone,” Musetti said.
The Italian mentioned that the umpire recognized the incident as unintentional, so he received only a warning and was permitted to continue the match.
“They were right to have a warning but I think the umpire saw that there was no intention about that and that’s why probably just let me continue my game,” he added.
Looking ahead, Musetti is set to face second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals of the 2025 French Open. The two players have met six times on the ATP Tour, with the former World No. 1 winning five of those encounters.
Their most recent clash was in the semifinals of the 2025 Italian Open, where Alcaraz triumphed in straight sets, winning 6-3, 7-6(4).
