Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer Breaks Silence on Micah Parsons’ Absence and Potential Minicamp Return

With Micah Parsons a virtual no-show at OTAs, head coach Brian Schottenheimer spoke about his availability for the Dallas Cowboys' mandatory minicamp.

As much as Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer tries, it may be a while before the entire roster is on the same page.

Since taking over the job from Mike McCarthy, Schottenheimer has drawn extensive praise for his work in setting up a culture and in the way that he’s conducted himself. However, with an extension for Cowboys defensive end Micah Parsons still not complete, just a year after the contract drama with CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott, the team’s organized team activities (OTAs) haven’t seen the full squad on the field.

Parsons, in particular, has been noticeable in his absence, but the former offensive coordinator has an update about his availability for the rest of the summer.

When Will Micah Parsons Be Back for the Dallas Cowboys?

Parsons’ contract situation remains in flux as he eyes a record-breaking deal that could make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

He did appear at OTAs once on Monday, May 19; at the time, Schottenheimer said, “It meant a lot to me,” speaking on the gesture from his superstar lineman. Since that one appearance, though, Parson has not been in attendance, instead traveling to Ibiza, Spain. Schottenheimer mentioned his travels when addressing his absence earlier this week.

With the team’s mandatory mini-camp just one week away, all eyes turned to the rookie head coach to provide an update on Parsons. Todd Archer of ESPN was present at the site, providing a paraphrased version of his comments.

On X, Archer wrote, “Brian Schottenheimer said he expects Micah Parsons to be at next week’s mandatory minicamp. Schottenheimer said he has been in contact with Parsons, who has been traveling. Players can be fined for missing next week’s camp.”

For Parsons, the routine is one he’s followed and perfected since joining the league in 2021 as the 12th overall pick. In that time frame, he’s suited up for 16, 17, 17, and 13 games, respectively, in each season from Year 1-4.

One of the most consistent and dominant defensive linemen in the NFL today, Parsons has tallied 12 or more sacks in each of his four seasons, with a career-high 14 in 2023. For his efforts, he’s already tallied an impressive rĂ©sumĂ©.

A three-time All-Pro selection, four-time Pro Bowler, and a Defensive Rookie of the Year, Parsons is well on his way to cementing himself as an all-time defender. But his standing with Dallas remains in question due to his contract.

Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones promised to give Parsons a record-breaking extension. With the price eclipsing the $40 million mark following the extensions for Ja’Marr Chase and Myles Garrett this offseason, it might be a higher number than Jones anticipated.
