Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill started the 2024-25 season by being detained by police outside Hard Rock Stadium and ended with him ready to move on to a different city. He sat himself out of the Dolphins’ Week 18 game against the New York Jets and went as far as to say that he wanted to leave the team.
However, no trade ensued during the offseason, and Hill is back for the Dolphins in 2025. The receiver acknowledged his difficult offseason head-on and claimed he didn’t deserve to be voted a team captain based on his past actions and behavior.
“I Gotta Prove Myself” – Tyreek Hill On Becoming Dolphins Team Captain
Appearing before the media at the start of the Dolphins’ OTAs, Hill addressed his tumultuous offseason, which included his wife, Lakeeta Vaccaro Hill, filing for divorce, and admitted it had been a tough situation for him. However, the receiver said he was focused on being a great father for his kids, the best player, and the best leader for his team.
“It’s tough, bro, it’s tough,” Hill said. “One thing I’m gonna say is money is a crazy thing for a lot of people but for me, we just going to let the detail handle itself because at the end of the day, the truth always comes out. So, my job is just to be a great father to all of my kids, be the best player I can be, and be the best leader I can be for these guys in the locker room.”

When asked whether he would like to become a Captain again, Hill responded by saying he didn’t deserve it.
“I gotta prove myself,” Hill explained. “This OTAs, training camp, I gotta prove myself. I gotta show up different. The mindset gotta be different. I don’t feel like I deserve it, and if I didn’t get it, I wouldn’t dwell on it. I wouldn’t sweat it because I put myself in that position.”
That’s quite honest from Hill, but his ability to take accountability for his actions is what makes him a great leader.
An eight-time Pro Bowler, Hill missed the playoffs last season for the first time in his NFL career, and it was a major source of his frustration in Week 18 when he sat out. He also failed to reach 1,000 receiving yards for just the third time in his nine-year career.
Hill was coming off back-to-back 1,700 receiving yard seasons with the Dolphins before the disappointing campaign in 2024 and will be back to chasing 2K receiving yards this upcoming season.
“At the end of the day, man, I’m just looking to move forward from that, hoping that I can prove to myself and prove to my teammates that I’m still one of them ones, man, who likes chasing 2K (receiving yards), still one of those ones chasing playoff dreams and all that great stuff,” Hill said.
