Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Five Other American Women Seeded in the 2025 French Open Main Draw

The French Open, an annual event on the legendary Stade Roland Garros, is one of the four Grand Slam events in professional tennis and the sole one hosted on clay. With seven seeded participants in the 2025 draw and a tide of new blood, this year’s American delegation presents a balance of experience and change in U.S. women’s tennis.

Seeded Players:

Topping the list is World No. 2 Coco Gauff, a Roland Garros 2022 finalist, who returns as one of the strongest contenders for the title. She is accompanied by other top 10 stars Jessica Pegula (3), Madison Keys (7), and Emma Navarro (9). Completing the seeded Americans are Amanda Anisimova (16), who reached the French Open semifinals as a teenager in 2019, and Peyton Stearns (28) and Sofia Kenin (31), the winner of the 2020 Australian Open.

Unseeded Players:

Aside from the seeds, there is some continuity of American presence in the unseeded lineup with a combination of old and emerging faces. It includes Danielle Collins, Hailey Baptiste, Alycia Parks, Caroline Dolehide, and Bernarda Pera. Young stars such as McCartney Kessler, Ashlyn Krueger, Robin Montgomery, Ann Li, and Katie Volynets will also seek to cause ripples on the clay.

Wild Cards, Qualifiers, and Lucky Losers:

In the wildcard category, 17-year-old Iva Jovic has earned her first French Open main draw appearance after topping the USTA’s Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge. The promising teen rose to the occasion during a five-week U.S. clay-court swing, securing the top spot with consistent performances.

Several Americans tried to enter through the qualifying rounds. While all of those except Taylor Townsend, including Emina Bektas, Lauren Davis, and Louisa Chirico, fell short of the ultimate hurdle, Taylor Townsend, a veteran, got through as a lucky loser. Townsend, who was the sixth-seeded qualifier, came so close after a three-set struggle in the third round with 26th-seeded Australian Daria Saville.

But a last-minute withdrawal by Belinda Bencic provided the opportunity, and Townsend will now have another chance at Roland Garros glory. Varvara Lepchenko was close with a third-round qualifying defeat, while others such as Hina Inoue and Whitney Osuigwe exited prematurely.
