Brock Purdy just got paid. Mr. Irrelevant went from being one of the least-paid quarterbacks in the National Football League to the seventh-best. His new deal, which pays him $53 million per year, slots him between Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins and Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions.
However, the real value is in the contract’s structure. Purdy gets $265 million over five years, with $181 million guaranteed and $165.05 million allocated in the first three years. That allows the San Francisco 49ers to fill out other pieces of the roster without running out of cap space.
Brock Purdy Signed a Contract That Gives the Niners a Ton of Flexibility
Former NFL safety Donte Whitner appeared on the Up & Adams Show to praise how Purdy’s contract worked out.
“I thought it was a great team-friendly deal,” Whitner said. “When you’re the last player drafted and you want to show gratitude to the team that actually believed in you. I think he did the right thing by getting the deal done.”
“So they really wanted to go a long way into getting Brock Purdy into mini-camp, training camp on time so they can go out and have a great season,” Whitner said.

Running back Christian McCaffrey and tight end George Kittle aren’t getting any younger, and the window for this iteration of the Niners to win a Super Bowl is not getting any bigger. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has already been to two Super Bowls and four NFC Championship Games, two in a row quarterbacked by Purdy. So, there’s a sense of urgency in the Bay Area.
2024 was especially harsh on the injury front. Christian McCaffrey missed 12 games. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a torn MCL and ACL in week seven against the Chiefs, which ended his season. George Kittle hurt his hamstring in week 10 and wasn’t the same down the stretch.
Trent Williams hurt his ankle in week nine, played through it in week 10, but was shut down for the rest of the season. Nick Bosa missed three games, while linebacker Fred Warner broke his ankle in week four and played on it for the entire season. Dre Greenlaw effectively missed the entire season (he tried to play in week 14) with a torn Achilles tendon.
In just three seasons, Brock Purdy has:

💰 64 passing TDs
💰 4 Playoff Wins
💰 NFC Championship

The silver lining of that cumulonimbus cloud of injuries is that the Niners have the easiest schedule in the NFL. Their opponents had a .415 winning percentage in 2024, featuring rebuilding teams including the New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, and Tennessee Titans.
The biggest key to the Niners’ success in the short term is health. Long term? It’s being able to afford filling out their roster. Like Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, Purdy signed a contract that allows the team to do that.
