2025 NHL Draft Rumors: Nashville Predators Predicted To Zero-In On NCAA Standout

As the 2025 NHL Draft approaches, the Nashville Predators are linked to James Hagens, a highly touted center from Boston College.

The Nashville Predators are poised to make a high-impact selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, and all signs point to Boston College standout James Hagens as the likely target. With the fifth overall pick, Nashville is in a prime position to address its most pressing need, elite talent at center.

Hagens, a freshman sensation in the NCAA, registered a point-per-game season with 37 points in 37 games and played a crucial role in helping Team USA secure gold at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. He also brings a winning pedigree, with a collection of medals from U18 and U20 international play.

This draft marks Nashville’s highest selection since 2014, when they picked defenseman Seth Jones fourth overall. After a disappointing 30-44-8 regular season, the franchise is looking to retool with top-tier talent. Hagens fits the mold as a high-skill, high-speed forward, something General Manager Barry Trotz has publicly stated he’s seeking.

Nashville Predators Look to Add Game-Changing Talent at Center

Hagens has been one of the most talked-about prospects in this draft class, even though his stock has fluctuated slightly. While some experts initially projected him as the No. 1 overall pick, others now place him around the fifth spot, right where Nashville picks.

Though questions have been raised about his inside game and tendency to play on the perimeter, there’s no denying his playmaking ability. Hagens combines elite vision, sharp hockey IQ, and standout skating. Scouts have praised his poise, creativity, and his ability to make plays on the rush. According to NHL Central Scouting, he “executes plays with the composure of an NHL veteran.”

One potential bonus? Chemistry. Hagens was teammates this past season with Nashville’s 2024 second-round pick Teddy Stiga at both Boston College and on Team USA. That familiarity could benefit the Predators long-term if both players develop as expected.

Other Options the Nashville Predators Could Consider

While Hagens seems like a natural fit, the draft order could still shift things. The New York Islanders, who won the draft lottery and now pick first, could surprise many by selecting the New York-born Hagens. If that happens, Nashville may pivot to other top centers like Michael Misa, Anton Frondell, or Caleb Desnoyers, all projected to go early.

Another intriguing name is Porter Martone, a 6’3” forward who scored 98 points in 57 OHL games this season. His combination of size and offensive production could be appealing to a team looking to bulk up its prospect pool. Brady Martin of the Soo Greyhounds also made waves this year and brings a gritty, competitive edge.

Still, if Hagens is on the board at five, Nashville may find it hard to pass on the opportunity. He may not be a generational talent, but he’s got the tools to become a dynamic top-six forward. For a franchise looking to re-establish itself, that might be just what they need.
