Drama Erupts As Daniil Medvedev Angrily Silences Italian Open Crowd

Daniil Medvedev shushed the Rome crowd before rain paused match point in a fiery Italian Open clash, allowing Lorenzo Musetti to later seal his first quarterfinal in Rome.

Tensions ran high at the 2025 Italian Open after Daniil Medvedev found himself at the center of a storm during a contentious Round of 16 clash against home favorite Lorenzo Musetti.

The 10th-seeded Russian, visibly upset, walked over to pro-Musetti fans and resolutely shushed them during an intense second-set exchange, before heavy rain had the match terminated abruptly, Musetti sitting pretty on the edge of victory.

Lorenzo Musetti Stuns Daniil Medvedev to Advance to His First-Ever Italian Open Quarterfinals

This is Medvedev’s sixth campaign in the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome, an event where he claimed a title in 2023. Following a first-round bye, the former World No. 1 powered through Britain’s Cameron Norrie and 24th seed Alexei Popyrin to enter the Round of 16, where his campaign came up against the passionate energy of the Roman crowd inside the Foro Italico. Musetti, seeded eighth, took the first set 7-5 and had the crowd going wild behind him.

The actual flashpoint arrived in the second set late, with Musetti up 5-3. As the Italian crowd exploded into support for its native, Medvedev, who was clearly frustrated, looked over at the stands and made a finger-to-lips motion, calling for quiet. The move elicited loud boos, adding to the drama in an already charged environment.

Soon thereafter, with Musetti leading 7-5, 5-4, and 30/30, rain clouds appeared and poured copious amounts over the stadium. Even as spectators rushed for cover, the match was played out for a while. Musetti calmly floated in a pinpoint drop shot on the wet clay to take match point, only to have the chair umpire stop play at that moment.

A few hours later, the match resumed and the Italian won the set 6-4 to reach his first quarterfinal in Rome.

Musetti Will Face Either Arthur Fils or Alexander Zverev

The 23-year-old Italian is appearing at his home Masters 1000 event for the fifth time in the main draw. He had a first-round bye and defeated Otto Virtanen and the 28th seed Brandon Nakashima to secure his appointment with Medvedev. Now, he has advanced to his first quarterfinals in Rome, where he will face either 13th seed Arthur Fils or second seed Alexander Zverev.

Outside of the singles event, Musetti has also been causing ripples in the doubles competition with compatriot Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian pair overcame brothers Jacopo and Matteo Berrettini to make the second round and will play second seeds Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten on May 14.
