Former NFL QB Chase Daniel Outlines Very Real Concern That Could Wreck Jaguars’ Plans for Travis Hunter

The 2025 NFL Draft was full of unique storylines and big personalities. Two of the biggest came out of a school that is not known to generate tons of NFL-caliber players, the University of Colorado.

Maybe it was because their head coach was the always controversial Deion Sanders, but Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter got a lot of attention in this draft. The young Sanders came because there were question marks about his ability to succeed in the pros.

Hunter’s talent is indisputable. He played both ways for the Buffaloes as a wide receiver and a cornerback, and he did very well. The Heisman winner was the first player to hear his name called in the draft for two positions.

The Jacksonville Jaguars moved up in the draft by trading with the Cleveland Browns to take Hunter with the second pick. However, the big question is how the Jags will use Hunter?

Chase Daniel Has Questions About Travis Hunter’s Plans

On a recent episode of the podcast “Scoop City,” co-hosts Dianna Russini and former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel discussed Hunter’s rookie season.

Russini brought up Taysom Hill, who is officially listed as a tight end but was previously a quarterback and kick returner. She said having to juggle all of the different positional meetings takes a mental toll on players, which is why she’s wondering how Jacksonville will use Hunter.

Daniel agreed, saying Hunter has been quite open about wanting to play both ways in the pros, as he did in college. He noted that the Jaguars’ new head coach, Liam Coen, is an offensive coach. He expects Coen to put his position players and playmakers where they can make big plays, including Hunter.

“I think you have to start him out offensively because he can make a bigger impact in the game,” Daniel told Russini regarding where he thinks Hunter will play. “But that’s the thing, where does he go from there? I would be surprised if he’s just the day one corner starter and the day one receiver starter.”

He added that perhaps there are some packages where he can work in as a defensive back. Daniel suggested fans might see him as a nickel or in a package with six defensive backs on the field, and he is the rover.

Regardless, he doesn’t see him starting at corner. He thinks he will have a handful of packages where he gets to help out. While people keep mentioning conditioning, Daniel agrees with Russini that the meetings and practices are a bigger issue.

“I think you sort of have to work it in. I just don’t see a world where he’s playing 130 snaps in a game in the NFL. It’s the meetings, how do you practice both positions? Not only do you have to practice, in the NFL, practices are very difficult. You exert a lot of energy,” explained Daniel as to why he doesn’t see Hunter fully playing both ways in the pros.

He added that the Jaguars are not moving on from quarterback Trevor Lawrence, despite him not reaching the level of generational talent that many expected. Daniel said that Coen is instead doing what good teams do, and building around him.

How the Jaguars use Hunter in Week 1 will be a top storyline as the season starts, and it won’t just be Jacksonville fans who are curious to see.
