Former NFL QB Chase Daniel Argues 49ers Star Brock Purdy Deserves More Than $50 Million Per Year

While the debate still rages on, a former NFL QB in Chase Daniel believes Brock Purdy is worth far more than the alleged $50 million number.

It has been an incredibly busy summer for the San Francisco 49ers. After a massively disappointing 2024 campaign, the team was hell bent on remaking almost its entire identity. Deebo Samuel is no longer on the roster, and neither are heavy-hitters like Dre Greelaw, Javon Hargrave, and Talanoa Hufanga.

However, their collection of moves feels like preparation for the upcoming extension of the former Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purdy. A major topic of discussion in the football world, his next salary has been a polarizing factor. But, according to a former NFL quarterback in Chase Daniel, his price deserves to be sky-high.

Chase Daniel Finds Brock Purdy Worthy of $50+ Million

The final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy was immediately impactful for San Francisco. Taking them to the NFC Championship Game in Year One, Year Two came to an end in Overtime of the Super Bowl, where he walked off the field with a lead.

Last year, however, with some weapons missing from the team due to injury, Purdy was far from his usual self, and the 49ers won just six games. As a result, it has made his contract a major source of dispute.

While the quarterback market is firmly above the $50 million mark these days (Dak Prescott became the highest-paid QB last season at $60 million a year), the effectiveness of Purdy without his weapons last season left his worth in question.

But for Chase Daniel, a former Super Bowl Champion and 15-year veteran, the asking price needs to be high.

Speaking on The Facility on FS1, he laid down his reasons, “It would be concerning to me if they just give him $50 million. I believe he needs more. Look at the 11 or 12 highest-paid quarterbacks right now in the NFL.”

That’s where he believes Purdy’s resume demands higher compensation. “I think Jordan Love is a better player than Brock Purdy. But Brock has done way more. Then you get to Trevor Lawrence – way more. Then you get to Tua [Tagovailoa] – way more.”

It is a trend that he believes even includes names like Justin Herbert. “If you gave Brock Purdy $50 million right now, he would slot in at number 11.” However, Daniel also made it clear that he didn’t think Purdy’s positioning was way off from that spot.

“Is he the 11th-best quarterback in the league? Give or take, that’s fair.” But a deeper dive into the numbers suggests he should earn more. Daniel wanted the conversation to be around the percentage of the salary cap he would take.

Pointing to names like Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Dak Prescott, and Patrick Mahomes, all of whom are near the 19-21% mark, he believed the 16% on Purdy would be a bargain.

“I understand it’s a lot of money ($50 million) out there. But when you’re talking about quarterback play, and you’re talking about a guy who’s taken you to a Super Bowl and almost won a Super Bowl, and been to two separate NFC Championship Games, I believe he deserves more.”

Then, he went a step further. “53 to 56 million is a bargain for Brock Purdy, in my opinion.” Leaving a parting message, he added on X, “Brock Purdy is a bargain at $50M/Yr…49ers would be lucky to get him at that. He’s better than you think.”
