How Shedeur Sanders’ Draft-Day Fall Fueled Record NFL Viewership

Saturday’s rounds four through seven telecasts drew an average͏ of 4.3 million viewers across ESP͏N, ABC, NF͏L Network͏, ESP͏N De͏p͏ortes, and digital ͏platforms.͏ This marked a 43͏% increase compared to ͏the final ͏day of the 20͏24͏ draft, making ͏it the most-watched Day 3 in͏ NFL Draft ͏history.

The curiosity surrounding Sanders’ prolonged availability significantly bolstered audience interest. Once seen by some analysts as a potential first-rounder and regarded as the No. 2 quarterback behind Cam Ward, Sanders instead fell to pick No. 144 in the fifth round, where the Cleveland Browns finally selected him. His continued absence from the board created a compelling narrative across all platforms.

As ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted:

“Sanders’ lack of top-end talent left him without an NFL home after Day 1. The slide out of Day 2 is harder to explain. Clearly the league spoke: Teams had a problem with Sanders and all that encompasses his draft profile. Yes, whispers persisted that his predraft process did not go well, particularly his interviews. But as a few people inside the league have surmised, slides happen when talent doesn’t match or surpass potential drawbacks. Teams hate distractions. If they felt Sanders’ presence would be one for whatever reason, his ability at the next level wasn’t intoxicating enough to offset all of that.”

Viewership numbers support this narrative arc. Rounds 2 and 3 on Friday drew 7.5 million viewers, a 48% increase over the second day of the previous year, while Round 1 coverage on Thursday averaged 13.6 million. What’s even more impressive is that the average viewership for the whole three-day draft coverage was 7.5 million, which is the second-highest in NFL Draft history and up 27% from the previous year.

Even in-person attendance saw a boost, with over 600,000 fans present in Green Bay — the second-highest total ever, though the count likely involved repeat attendees and double-counting.

The broadcast momentum slowed following Sanders’ selection, with ESPN transitioning directly to a UFL game that drew 615,000 viewers. Still, by then, the NFL had already secured a massive boost in engagement, largely thanks to the suspense surrounding Sanders.

In effect, Sanders’ fall gave the NFL’s broadcast partners the perfect storyline. It kept fans watching and analysts speculating and drove a viewership spike that may be difficult to replicate — unless another high-profile name like Arch Manning faces a similar fate in 2026.
