Steve Kerr Snubs 2-Time DPOY in Naming Draymond Green the Greatest Defender He Has Ever Seen

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has sparked quite the debate by declaring Draymond Green the best defender he has ever seen, a bold statement considering Kerr’s extensive NBA career.

This declaration, made after the Warriors’ intense Game 4 victory over the Houston Rockets, has ignited dialogue amongst basketball fans, especially given the historical context of some of the defensive stalwarts Kerr played with.

In his 15-year professional career, Kerr played with arguably the greatest defenders in league history, including Shaquille O’Neal, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Tim Duncan, and David Robinson, among others. His experience playing with these defensive legends surely gives him the ability to make these bold claims about Green, and the Warriors star did his best to endorse Kerr’s claim in Game 4.

Steve Kerr Reserves Highest Praise for Draymond Green

Green’s defensive prowess has been a cornerstone of the Warriors’ success for over a decade. This season, the 35-year-old veteran continues to showcase his versatility and impact on the defensive end.

With a defensive rating of 108.6, Green has averaged 1.5 steals and 1 block per game across 68 appearances, cementing his status as a Defensive Player of the Year finalist. His ability to guard multiple positions, anticipate plays, and communicate effectively makes him the anchor of the Warriors’ defense.

With that said, how can Kerr make this bold claim and therefore discredit two-time DPOY winner Dennis Rodman? The Worm was a seven-time All-Defensive First Team member, a seven-time rebounding champion, and the rare Hall of Famer who was inducted mainly for his defensive mastery.

While Rodman is considered one of the greatest defenders of his generation, Kerr’s comments highlight Green’s unique skill set.

Last night’s Game 4 against the Rockets provided a compelling case to showcase Green’s defensive skills. Despite facing early foul trouble and a gritty Houston team, Green delivered pivotal defensive plays, most notably a crucial stop on Rockets center Alperen Şengün, helping secure the Warriors’ narrow 109-106 victory. His defensive intensity and leadership were palpable, even amidst the heated exchanges and technical fouls.

Green’s ability to elevate his game in crucial moments, particularly in the fourth quarter, underscores his value to the Warriors’ championship aspirations. Kerr’s praise reflects not only Green’s statistical achievements but also his intangible qualities. Green’s defensive IQ, his ability to read the game, and his vocal leadership are elements that transcend traditional metrics.

While the debate over the greatest defender of all time will continue, Steve Kerr’s endorsement firmly places Green among the elite, acknowledging his enduring impact on the Golden State Warriors and the NBA.
