The 2025 NFL Draft is underway, and it was an exciting first night. Some selections were exactly what was expected, and also some major surprises from a few big trades.
Now it’s on to Day 2 and getting to know the players who are left, including Dylan Sampson, the running back from Tennessee. In PFSN’s latest mock draft, they have Sampson going in the third round, 77th overall, to the New England Patriots.
“In the immediate timeline, the Patriots are set with Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson, but Dylan Sampson is a pick for the present and the future. The Patriots met with the dynamic RB twice this cycle, affirming their interest in his slashing speed through gaps.”
But who is Sampson, and who are his parents?
From Louisiana Roots to Tennessee Star: Dylan Sampson’s Story
Sampson is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and is the son of Adrian and Eric Sampson. However, there is not much other information available about them.
He also has two brothers, Austin and Justin, and one sister, Payton.
In Baton Rouge, Sampson attended Dutchtown High School. It is also the alma mater of NFL Pro Bowler Eddie Lacy. During Sampson’s time at Dutchtown, he surpassed Lacy as the school’s all-time leading rusher.
He was a four-star recruit who turned down offers from Arkansas, LSU, Penn State, and Mississippi State to play for Tennessee.
Sampson Became a Volunteer
Sampson spent the majority of his first two seasons as a backup, but he never missed an opportunity to show the team he had what it takes to be a starter. During his freshman season, he had 58 carries for 397 yards and six touchdowns. He led the team in yards per carry with 6.8.
He came out hot in his sophomore year in their opening day game against the University of Virginia. He had four touchdowns, three rushing and one receiving, in the Vols’ 49-13 win.
Sampson got his first start against Iowa in the Citrus Bowl at the end of the 2023 season. He carried the ball 20 times for 133 yards.
In 2024, his junior year, was his true breakout season. He set the school record for single-season rushing touchdowns, with 22. That record had previously been set in 1929 by Gene McEver. He was named First-Team All-SEC and earned SEC Offensive Player of the Year.
What Does Sampson Bring to the NFL?
At 5’8″ and 200 lbs, Sampson is slightly below average in size. According to his NFL Draft profile, he has good instincts and can pick up yards after contact.
“Sampson separates himself from other backs in the class with an impressive feel for timing, spacing, and blocking scheme. Sampson plays with the instincts of a seasoned veteran and has the talent to build on what he started in 2024.”
He is applauded for his discipline and his vision on the field. However, once in the pros, he will need to work on ball security and pass protection.
