Mike McCarthy is set to appear on The Pat McAfee Show’s “NFL Draft Spectacular,” which will be broadcast live from the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay. It marks a return to the city he called home for 13 seasons as head coach of the Green Bay Packers.
After coaching for 32 straight seasons in some capacity, the veteran coach is stepping into his second year away from the sidelines in the past seven years. He parted ways with the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason. While McCarthy has said he’s open to coaching again in 2026, this week he’ll get a chance to flex his broadcasting chops instead.
Taking a Look at Mike McCarthy’s NFL Coaching Career
Mike McCarthy has been one of the NFL’s most well-known head coaches since landing his first shot in 2006. He spent five years as a grad assistant in college, working for Fort Hays State and then Pitt, where he got his first job as a wide receivers coach.
From there, things moved fast. After just one season in that role, he jumped to the NFL, joining the Kansas City Chiefs as an offensive quality control coach. Two years later, he was promoted to quarterbacks coach and held that job for four seasons.
McCarthy then had a one-year stint with the Packers as their quarterbacks coach before taking over as offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. He stayed in that role for five seasons before moving to the San Francisco 49ers for one year in the same position.
In 2006, he finally got his shot as a head coach, taking over in Green Bay. He spent 13 seasons with the Packers, going 125-77-2 and winning Super Bowl XLV — the fourth championship in team history.
After stepping away for the 2019 season, McCarthy returned to coach the Dallas Cowboys. He led the team for five seasons, going 49-35 before parting ways earlier this year.
His 174 wins rank fourth among NFL head coaches since 2000. Only Bill Belichick, Andy Reid, and Mike Tomlin have more victories over that span.
McCarthy has made 12 playoff appearances but has gone just 11-11 in those games.
