‘A Boom-or-Bust Prospect’ — Analyst Gets Brutally Honest About 70-TD QB Ahead of 2025 NFL Draft

Tyler Shough has a high opinion of his own skills, but one analyst recently labelled him a boom-or-bust prospect ahead of the NFL draft.

Tyler Shough, the 6 ft 4, 219-pound quarterback from Louisville, is one of the most experienced prospects to enter the NFL draft. He started off at Oregon where he was in the same recruiting class as Justin Herbert, spent time with Texas Tech, and then after dealing with some bad injury luck, finally found his footing with Louisville.

Playing under head coach Jeff Brohm, Shough passed for 3,195 yards, 23 TD, and only 6 picks. When asked who he thinks he’s should be compared to, the 25-year-old boldly put himself in the same class as Super Bowl winner Matt Stafford and 2024 NFL MVP Josh Allen. However, not everyone agrees with him.

Analyst Gives His Opinion On Tyler Shough Ahead Of NFL Draft

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breers has a brutally honest assessment that differs from Shough’s on his latest column. He mentioned a comment from an NFC coordinator on the 25-year-old that claimed that he had the second-best arm but was inconsistent in his footwork, and said:

“Which, in a lot of ways, makes Shough a boom-or-bust prospect. With seven years of experience, and pro-style mileage, he should be ready to go quickly. His ceiling is pretty high. But his age, injuries and pocket presence are enough to cast doubt, too, making his a very, very interesting case.”

The questions about age are legitimate, not because 25 is that old, it’s because Shough had to stay in college extra years because of a combination of Covid issues and injuries he suffered at Oregon and Texas Tech.

For his part, Shough isn’t concerned.

“I don’t necessarily pay attention to specific mocks, and I think my whole thing throughout this whole process is obviously my ability to talk about what we did offensively,” he said on NFL Network. “I played in five, six different offenses, and I’ve been adaptable in every single place I’ve been — competed and started.”

“I think the unknown-ness is because I have been written off just from bone breaks and some injuries. It’s unfortunate timing, but I think once you get past it, we can look at what I’ve been able to do when playing, and I think how far I can continue to grow,” Shough added.

Where the 25-year-old lands depends on a combination of need and best player available. He’s widely projected to be a day two pick, but is the buzz loud enough to elevate him to the first round where a team like the Rams or Steelers could grab him as a developmental pick? One thing’s for sure, Shough is about to find out if his opinion of himself matches reality.
