The 2025 NFL Draft is rapidly approaching, and Aaron Rodgers remains on the free agent market. The 20-year veteran seemingly only has one option for next season, but a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers has yet to happen.
A picture of the signal-caller walking on a beach wrapped in a blanket recently went viral, and Rodgers explained what he was listening to on a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
What Was Aaron Rodgers Listening to in That Beach Photo?
Since the new NFL league year began, the list of teams needing a veteran quarterback has gotten considerably smaller. The Cleveland Browns and New York Giants each added two. The Las Vegas Raiders traded for Geno Smith. Sam Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Even Daniel Jones and Justin Fields found a home for 2025.
Rodgers remains on the street despite a “positive” in-house meeting with the Steelers. At this point, the speculation is that Rodgers is waiting to see how the draft unfolds so he doesn’t walk into a similar situation as Kirk Cousins did last year. He can afford to take his time, but the indecision could be causing problems for Pittsburgh.
All-Pro outside linebacker T.J. Watt had a cryptic post that sparked trade rumors. This ultimately appears to be a move for more money, but a recent report suggests a Watt extension hasn’t happened yet because the team is waiting to see what Rodgers decides.
Rodgers is coming off one of his worst statistical seasons, throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 2024. He’s an enigma at this stage of his career, seemingly wanting teams to operate on his terms rather than conform to the organization.
He’s spent a lot of time contemplating life recently and discussed things with Pat McAfee. The former Indianapolis Colts punter couldn’t help but bring up Rodgers’ viral beach picture when the 20-year veteran appeared on his show.

McAfee tweeted a clip from Rodgers’ appearance with, “What are you listening to on that beach @AaronRodgers12 #PMSLive.” McAfee jokingly asked Rodgers if he was listening to “Renegade” by Styx, the pump-up song used by the Steelers. He then asked how often the quarterback thinks about football throughout the day.
Rodgers responded, “It’s a small percentage because conversations have been had. There’s no more contemplation. I’m taking care of my people right now, and I’m taking care of my personal life responsibilities. I’m keeping the conversation open as well. What I listen to on the beach? I listen to mostly Alan Watts speeches.”
Watts is a well-known orator, as McAfee said, and apparently helps Rodgers pass the time while he’s on the beach. The quarterback has claimed that he’s open to playing, but also open to retirement. It’s unclear which one of Watts’ speeches Rodgers was listening to, but hopefully it speeds up his decision.
