Nico Iamaleava, quarterback for the University of Tennessee, made headlines after an unprecedented move at the collegiate level by seeking a massive renegotiation of his NIL deal that would reportedly pay him $4 million per year. Travis Kelce’s ex-girlfriend, Kayla Nicole, took to social media to share her thoughts.
Tennessee Stands Firm: Nobody Is Above the Program
“It’s unfortunate, just the situation and where we’re at with Nico. I want to thank him for everything that he’s done since he’s gotten here—that’s as a recruit, to who he was as a player and how he competed inside of the building—and so a great appreciation for that side of it. Obviously, we’re moving forward as a program without him,” said Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel during a press conference.
In addition to his initial strong stance taken during the press conference, Heupel further expanded on his decision via Vol Network.

Shortly after Heupel announced that the program would move on without Iamaleava, Nicole shared her thoughts via a post on X, echoing Heupel’s sentiments.

“Nobody ever bigger than the program baby,” Nicole said. Her statement seems to applaud the Volunteers for refusing to budge to the demands of Iamaleava.
What’s Next for Tennessee and Iamaleava?
Iamaleava was expected to take the next step in his development with the Volunteers and potentially catapult himself to the top of the 2026 NFL Draft boards. Now, he will need to find a new program that will enable his development.
Iamaleava completed 63.8% of his passes last season, throwing for 2,616 yards, 19 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He also rushed for 358 yards and three touchdowns, flashing potential as a dual-threat quarterback.
Iamaleava has the tools to be a top-tier college quarterback and will likely draw significant interest in the transfer portal. Immediately upon the news of him entering the portal, Notre Dame and USC were listed as two of the top fits for Iamaleava to develop, improve his draft stock and compete for a national championship.
But John Brice, a Notre Dame writer for Irish Illustrated, reported that neither program has any interest.

It is all speculation at this point, but current teams commonly linked to Iamaleava include UCLA, Texas Tech and Colorado. The connections don’t have much credence and mainly rely on the schools having the financial capability to meet his NIL demands—and in the case of Colorado, a superstar head coach that shouldn’t be counted out in the recruitment of any player.
As for Tennessee, redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and true freshman George MacIntyre are now the two in-house options at quarterback. Iamaleava’s decision is one that could have ripple effects throughout the college football world, and it will be intriguing to see where he lands and how the situation unfolds next season for all parties involved.
