NFL Team Reveals Plan For ‘Massive’ Stadium Renovations

The Tempa Bay Buccanneers are planning a massive renovation project for the Raymond James Stadium as they look to attract more Super Bowl games.

The Tempa Bay Buccaneers are planning a massive renovation for its home – Raymond James Stadium. The stadium has been the home of the Bucs since 1998 and has hosted three Super Bowls so far, including the one in 2021, when Tampa Bay became the first team in NFL history to play and win a Super Bowl on their home field.

Buccaneers Planning Massive Renovations For Raymond James Stadium

The stadium is managed by Hillsborough County and the Tampa Sports Authority and was largely built with public money. The 65,000-seater venue underwent several renovations over the years, the last being in 2018, which cost $160 million. Only $29 million of that was public money, while the rest was paid by the team.

Alongside hosting the Bucs games, it has hosted countless concerts, college football, pro wrestling, soccer, monster trucks, and exhibition baseball events. But perhaps its biggest revenue stream has been three Super Bowls, and with the NFL indicating that it would need renovations to be able to host, owner Joel Glazer has vowed massive renovations.

“We’re always looking at ways to improve everything around us, to improve the community,” Glazer told reporters Tuesday at the NFL’s annual meetings in Palm Beach. “Our focus right now is the Buccaneers and what needs to happen there so we can bring Super Bowls and everything there.”

“The fan experience is so important in the NFL, and in all sports. So we’re constantly looking at the stadium, constantly looking at how we can improve it,” Glazer added. “There will be a time and a place, and we’ll want to always improve the stadium and keep it up to the most competitive standards.”

The Bucs’ lease is ending in 2028, but given Glazer’s comments, they aren’t looking for a replacement. He, however, confirmed reports that they hadn’t had substantial discussions with Hillsborough County yet but would do so once both of the parties do their assessments of the renovations needed.

“I’ve heard people say there’s been no communication,” Glazer said. “That’s actually not very accurate. You know, we’re going through a phase right now where we’re assessing the stadium, what might be needed. I know they’re assessing the stadium and what might be needed. Once both of us are done with our assessments, then we come together and work through things.”

“It’s such an important part of the community,” Glazer added. “There’s multiple people that are affected by this. Not just us, but tourism and everything like that. We’ve all got to make sure we come together and meet the needs of what’s necessary.”

According to a 2024 report, the renovations for the Raymond James Stadium could cost $137 million between 2028 and 2032. However, the Tampa Bay Business Journal estimated it to be between $500-600 million.
