‘This Was Not Option A, B, C, or D’ — NFL Analysts Criticize Giants’ ‘Panic Move’ for Russell Wilson

Two analysts rip apart the New York Giants and their offseason after the latest Russell Wilson signing, calling it another panic-driven decision.

The New York Giants were essentially stuck in no man’s land. After failing to add Matthew Stafford, they also appeared to be out of the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes. With the third overall pick, there was a distinct possibility that they could walk out of Green Bay without either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders.

As a result, the team made a precautionary move to add Russell Wilson to the squad. Earlier, in free agency, they signed Jameis Winston on a two-year deal. While bringing in Wilson gave them a true starting-caliber QB on the roster, a few analysts were firmly against the idea of Wilson in New York.

New York Giants Get Crushed for Russell Wilson Move

Signing Daniel Jones did not work out well for the New York Giants. Last season, after an atrocious start, the team had to cut him loose. To make matters worse, Saquon Barkley, the man they neglected in favor of Jones, won a Super Bowl and broke the single-season rushing yards record.

The Giants, instead, had to focus on the 2025 NFL Draft to find a potential franchise quarterback. However, with possibilities uncertain, the Wilson signing isn’t earning them any favors. Josina Anderson took to X to call it a “panic move.”

Anderson explained, “The agent getting this deal for Wilson, given the market circumstances, is good work. On the flip side, with Winston already on the roster at his cost & the upcoming Draft, it feels like a panic move by the #Giants, especially given what I just heard today regarding one team’s current view that Cleveland sounds potentially open to trading back, per a league source.”

Even Ari Meirov didn’t fully buy into the move, calling it another panic-driven move in an offseason full of them. According to him, it all boiled down to the ultimatum that owner John Mara gave to general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

“They were pursuing Stafford. At one point, they thought they were getting Stafford. And they believed, ‘If we get Stafford in this building and the free agency that we’re gonna have, we’re gonna win in 2025, and we’re all gonna be safe.'”

That plan did not work out. “Then they had this pursuit of Rodgers, which, they were going really hard at him. They were really interested in him.” But, by the day, it seems more unlikely that he joins the Giants.

“We heard all the rumblings about they’re gonna trade for the number one overall pick. They’re gonna get Ward, who, hands down for most people in the NFL, executives, and scouts, they all believe, he is  QB1 in this Draft.”

However, it once again didn’t work out, and it looks like Ward is likely going to be a Tennessee Titan. “Here they are scrambling again, and they’ve got it to this point where they’re signing Winston. Now we have him. But let’s also sign Wilson. Now we also have him.”

As a result, it’s left them in the situation they are currently in. “And we also have our third overall pick as well, we’ll take a quarterback there. And it’s a whole mess over here of a bunch of quarterbacks and guys inside of a quarterback room.”

Meirov wasn’t done, however, adding that the team’s decision-making didn’t add up, especially with the Wilson signing, who he claims is “going into all of this wanting to be the starter, and it’s gonna be his job, and he wants the job, and it’s nobody else here.”

To him, it all circles back to the comments Mara made about his patience-waning comment public. He put a bow on it with one final statement.

“The Giants and the offseason they’ve had – It’s kind of a lot of panic moves to make sure they win in 2025 – and right now, this quarterback room if we’re being honest, this wasn’t option A, B, C, or D for them.”

Instead, Meirov believes it’s become a case of preserving Schoen and Daboll’s jobs, which will hamper the franchise’s future beyond the 2025 season.
