Zach Wilson’s turbulent rookie deal is over, and he hopes to start a new NFL chapter with the Miami Dolphins. So is his mother, Lisa, who appeared to be more than happy as the QB officially inked the one-year, $6 million deal with the Dolphins.
Zach Wilson’s Mother Drops 4-Word Reaction To QB Signing With Miami Dolphins
Wilson was selected with the second overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft but has been a shadow of the QB he appeared in his three years in college football. Wilson completed just 60% of his passes on average in his three years with the Jets, tallying a maximum of 2,334 yards and nine touchdowns in a season.
By comparison, he has two more interceptions than touchdowns in his three seasons of playing.
Wilson played with the Denver Broncos last year but didn’t play a single snap. As has been the case with the likes of Sam Darnold and Geno Smith, the quarterback is hoping a change of scenery from New York revitalizes his career.
“It was challenging,” Wilson said of his time in New York via the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “There’s things, looking back, I wish I could’ve done so much better, maybe would’ve approached differently, but I think, at the end of the day, it’s all part of the story. Learning from those experiences and those hard times ultimately is what got me here and hopefully being able to take advantage of the opportunity here.”
Wilson’s mother, Lisa, is equally hoping the same for the QB and shared her excitement over the deal in an Instagram story.
“Love this and him.”

Darnold was in the same boat as Wilson, but a year with Kevin O’Connell and elite wide receivers to target turned him into a fringe MVP candidate and landed him a $100+ million contract with the Seattle Seahawks.
It remains to be seen if Wilson can replicate the success Darnold enjoyed with the Vikings. But for now, the Dolphins’ sole purpose in signing him has to be as an insurance policy for Tagovailoa.
Last year, despite injuries keeping him out for a big chunk of the season, Tagavailoa still finished eighth on PFSN’s QB+ metric. So, he can handle the Miami offense pretty well. But with a history of concussions and four of his five seasons ending in 13 or fewer played games, the Dolphins have a solid backup in Wilson now, and he could potentially stabilize the offense if the Hawaiian misses extended time in 2025 as well.
