When Does Free Agency Start?
NFL free agency essentially has two start dates. The “legal tampering period” begins on Monday, March 10, at 12 p.m., when unrestricted free agents (UFA) can officially begin discussions with teams. However, we usually see a number of signings announced within minutes of the legal tampering window opening.
The second start date is Wednesday, March 12, at 4 p.m., when the new NFL league year begins. That is when the signings announced in the previous 52 hours can become official, and any trades that have happened can be officially processed.
That Wednesday date and time are also when restricted free agents (RFAs) who have been tendered by their team can begin negotiating with other teams. RFAs are not allowed to officially negotiate during the legal tampering window, so they have to wait two more days for their opportunity.
How Long Does Free Agency Last?
There is no defined end date to free agency for UFAs, as players who are not signed remain free agents in perpetuity until they strike a deal with a team. However, for any player who became a UFA due to the end of their contract (i.e., not being released by their former team), there is a deadline late in April, at which point their signing will not be considered in the compensatory pick formula for the following year’s NFL Draft.
There is an endpoint to free agency for RFAs. They have until April 18 to sign an offer sheet with a new team. At that point, the team who tendered them has until April 23 to exercise their right of first refusal of those players. In essence, the RFA signs an offer sheet, and their original team is given the option to match that contract by that date.
What Do the Different Free Agency Designations Mean?
Unrestricted free agent (UFA) – A UFA is a player with four or more accrued seasons in the NFL who has either come to the end of his contract or been released by his previous team. A player can also become a UFA if they have three accrued seasons, have reached the end of their contract, and were not tendered by their previous team.
Restricted free agent (RFA) – RFAs are players with three accrued NFL seasons to their name who have come to the end of their contract. When a player is a restricted free agent, his previous team has the right to offer him one of three RFA tenders. These tenders have a set contract value and a set level of compensation assigned to them.
An RFA is free to negotiate with other teams, but his previous team has the right of first refusal on any offer sheet he signs. If they choose not to match the offer sheet, the tender compensation will be received.
Exclusive rights free agent (ERFA) – An exclusive rights free agent is a player with two or fewer accrued seasons and an expired contract. Keeping an ERFA is simple for NFL teams. All they have to do is extend a qualifying offer to the player, and he will be unable to negotiate with other teams. A qualifying offer is a one-year contract at the league minimum salary based on the player’s experience level.
