Cowboys Star Admits ‘Emotions Got the Best of Me’ After Heated Media Confrontation

Dallas Cowboys star cornerback Trevon Diggs offered his side of the story on his viral postgame interaction with reporter Mike Leslie.

Trevon Diggs kinda sorta regrets his heated postgame interaction with a Dallas Cowboys reporter.

In case you missed it, the star corner confronted WFAA-TV’s Mike Leslie after he questioned Diggs’ effort on a key play from Dallas’ 30-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Diggs shared his side of the story on Monday, and Leslie responded.

Let’s go over everything you need to know about this bizarre story.

Why Was Trevon Diggs Upset With Cowboys Reporter?

Diggs showed questionable effort while chasing down 49ers tight end George Kittle on a 43-yard catch-and-run during the third quarter. The 26-year-old corner wasn’t matched up with Kittle on the play but appeared to run at less than full speed as the star tight end barreled toward the end zone.

“What is Trevon Diggs doing on this play?” Leslie wrote in a post on the X platform.

Take a look:

Only Diggs knows whether he truly gave maximum effort on the play.

Regardless, he took issue with Leslie’s tweet and confronted him about it after the game.

What Did Diggs Say During Heated Postgame Exchange?

During postgame media availability, Diggs left the Cowboys’ locker room to admonish Leslie in front of a group of reporters.

“That’s what you took from that?” Diggs asked Leslie. “Out of that whole play, that’s what you took from that? You don’t know football. You can’t do nothing that I do. You can’t go out there and do nothing. Stay in your lane, buddy. Stop trying me, dog.”

Leslie responded: “Just asking the question, Trevon. I mean, I’m happy to have you answer the question.”

The incident has created yet another distraction for a reeling Cowboys team that’s 3-4 through eight weeks and teetering on collapse.

After taking a day to think about it, Diggs addressed the issue during an appearance on Micah Parsons’ podcast.

Diggs Shares His Side of the Story, Reporter Responds

Diggs acknowledged he could’ve handled the situation better but stopped short of an outright apology.

Here are his full remarks:

“I just felt like it was unnecessary,” Diggs said of Leslie’s tweet. “I just felt like he was trying to use my name for clicks. And after the game, I just happened to see it. I looked, I clicked on it, I seen who it was, and I was like, ‘Oh, he’s right here. I just saw you.’ So I went up to him, and I just spoke how I felt.

“I feel there was a lot of emotions just losing, coming off the game, and we’re fresh off the loss. I’m a competitor, so I’m wanting to win. So just a lot of emotions. I kind of let my emotions get the best of me.

“But at the end of the day, it still doesn’t make it right for anybody just to be saying anything, or just trying to throw dirt on your name, or make you seem like you were doing bad or a bad job — because I felt I played my hardest game yesterday.

“I felt like I did everything I could. I felt like I was tackling, setting the edges, just doing everything to help my team win. And for him to try to throw that on my name, it just didn’t sit right with me because he was like completely wrong.”

Diggs insisted he doesn’t have a problem handling criticism when he feels it’s warranted.

“If I was wrong, like if I gave up the play, gave up the touchdown or something like, I can’t say nothing,” Diggs said. “Like, I have to take that on the chin. But it’s like you’re just anything, I’m not going for that. I’m not going to just allow you to try to make me seem out of that play, make me seem like I’m the problem.

“That’s not cool. And you’re right here. You work for the Cowboys — you’re not [working] for the Cowboys, you work with us. Like, you might not know what’s going on, but you know that wasn’t on me. So it just was weird to me. And I just didn’t like that.”

Leslie responded to Diggs’ comments in an X post.

“I’m aware he was in man coverage,” Leslie wrote. “I wasn’t referring to that part of the play. Clearly the initial responsibility of how that play happened lies with Donovan Wilson. And I tweeted as such in the moment. My tweet regarding Trevon was only about the back half of the play, where it looked like he wasn’t giving full effort.”

Diggs and the Cowboys will look to put this controversy behind them and get back in the win column when they visit the Falcons on Sunday.

Dallas’ following three games are against the Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans, and Washington Commanders.
