Bengals Cut Veteran, Add 12 Players to Practice Squad, Have 4 Spots Open

The Cincinnati Bengals added 12 players to their practice squad to round out the initial roster with four vacancies remaining.

CINCINNATI – After claiming defensive end KJ Henry on waivers from the Washington Commanders and waiving running back Trayveon Williams, the Cincinnati Bengals continued rounding out the team by adding 12 players to the practice squad today.

All 12 of them were with the team in camp.

Cincinnati Bengals Announce Practice Squad Signings

And you can expect Williams to fill one of the four openings shortly, based on his tweet.

Let’s take a look at each of the 12 already signed:

Jalen Davis, Cornerback

The player with the most experience among the practice squad members, Davis has appeared in 55 games, 50 of which have come with the Bengals in the last four seasons.

Davis was free to sign elsewhere but elected to remain in Cincinnati, where he knows the coaches, the scheme, and the potential.

Logan Woodside, Quarterback

Woodside struggled in his preseason starts against the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts, but he knows the system and will serve as an emergency option. But don’t rule out the Bengals adding another quarterback to the practice squad sometime in September.

Nate Brooks, Cornerback

The Bengals brought Brooks in a few days into camp. He is one of the few on the practice squad with NFL experience, but it’s only four games, and his most recent appearance was in 2020.

Cole Burgess, Wide Receiver

The SUNY-Courtland product had an instant connection with offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher, who also attended the tiny school.

But even with Ja’Marr Chase sitting out all of the practices, Burgess struggled to earn reps. The Bengals worked him as a kick returner in the preseason, so he’ll continue to develop that skill as well on the practice squad.

Devin Cochran, Offensive Tackle

The 2022 UDFA barely played in the final two preseason games, watching most of the action from the sideline along with Jackson Carman.

But the reasons for holding those two out as long as they did were different. The team knew it was through with Jackson, but it had a plan to bring back Cochran and didn’t want him auditioning for other teams.

Domenique Davis, Defensive Tackle

An injury derailed Davis’ 2024 camp after flashing in the two previous preseasons.

When healthy, Davis will have a chance to be the first defensive tackle promoted if injuries on the 53-man roster create an opening.

Shaka Heyward, Linebacker

The 2023 UDFA made some splash plays in camp and will stick around for a second season on the Bengals’ practice squad.

Trey Hill, Interior Offensive Line

The 2021 sixth-round pick has struggled to develop, but he sticks around as depth at center in case Ted Karras or seventh-round rookie Matt Lee have to miss time.

Kendric Pryor, Wide Receiver

The 2022 UDFA was claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars after cutdown day, but he returned to the Bengals last year and made the most plays – by far – this summer among the receivers who didn’t make the 53.

Joe Burrow and Jake Browning threw multiple touchdown passes to Pryor in red-zone drills and completed passes in other high-leverage spots during camp.

Shedrick Jackson, Wide Receiver

The nephew of Bo Jackson flashed early in camp but couldn’t keep the momentum going. He’ll get another season to try to develop his skills.

PJ Jules, Safety

Another rookie UDFA who found himself in a crowded room, Jules sticks around on the practice squad.

Cam Grandy, Tight End

The only tight end in camp who didn’t make the 53, Grandy played well in limited reps. And three of the five tight ends who made the 53 have expiring contracts after this season.
