Another week and still no touchdown in the Chargers Jim Harbaugh Era.
While Cameron Dicker converted three field goals last week, Los Angeles fans must wait for their first taste of the end zone in 2024.
Incumbent backup QB Easton Stick struggled, completing eight of his 13 attempts for 85 yards and an interception. He continues to fight off UFL QB Luis Perez, who completed 13 of his 20 passes for 78 yards.
While the passing offense struggled, Los Angeles saw some improvement from the rushing attack as rookie sixth-round RB Kimani Vidal converted 11 carries into 49 yards.
While the defense has held opponents to no more than 16 points, the Chargers’ coaching staff will pray for more offensive competence. Getting held out of the end zone in all three preseason matchups would not be a good sign heading into the regular season.
Justin Herbert will come back, but a team should be able to occasionally rely on their backup to generate some offense.
Conversely, the Cowboys bounced back nicely from a Week 1 loss, beating the Las Vegas Raiders 27-12.
QB Trey Lance improved mightily in his second week of action, completing 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown while adding 34 yards and a touchdown scamper on the ground. The former 49ers’ third-overall pick has shown plenty to take the backup job from Cooper Rush.
The Cowboys also got quite a boost of confidence in their kicker, Brandon Aubrey.
After getting the ball back in the second quarter with 27 seconds remaining, Lance drove the Cowboys to the Raiders 48-yard line. With three seconds left, Aubrey lined up and converted a 66-yard field goal, which would’ve been tied with Justin Tucker for the longest field in NFL history … if it was the regular season.
With all three levels of the game improving from their preseason debut, the Cowboys can feel a lot better about the minimal amount of moves they made in the offseason.
Now, if they can get one of Dak Prescott, Ceedee Lamb, or Micah Parsons under contract, the preseason will have gone as well as it could have.
