The Steelers had another disappointing outing, dropping their second preseason game. While the Steelers were able to find the end zone twice in Week 1, the offense struggled in QB Russell Wilson’s debut in the black and gold. The Steelers were scoreless in Wilson’s five drives to start Week 2.
However, once Justin Fields entered the game, the offensive production turned around.
After a three-and-out, Fields led the Steelers to the Buffalo 25 for a field goal just before the end of the first half. Fields navigated Pittsburgh to the red zone two more times, but the Steelers would turn the ball over on downs both drives.
While Wilson was rusty, the gap between the two quarterbacks is insignificant. Should Fields outperform Wilson again in the final preseason matchup, it’s fair to wonder which quarterback should start for the Steelers, and it will create quite a bit of drama.
Although Wilson was brought in to be the starter, losing his spot to Fields could be another nail in the coffin of his career.
On the other hand, the Lions bounced back nicely after serving up a 14-3 dud against the Giants in Week 1.
Nate Sudfeld scored a touchdown and completed 14 of 27 attempts for 196 yards with an interception. His competition, Hendon Hooker, looked good returning from a concussion against New York, completing 12 of his 15 attempts for 150 yards and punching in a 7-yard touchdown after orchestrating a seven-play, 70-yard drive.
His snaps were limited due to the concussion, but Hooker is completing 70.8% of his passes and has protected the ball well so far. The second-year QB has only been sacked once compared to Sudfeld’s four and has added 45 yards on the ground and scored the only Detroit rushing touchdown in the preseason.
With one more matchup left before the regular season, Hooker and Sudfeld have one last chance to solidify their spot as the backup.
