After EA Sports announced the ratings for quarterbacks in Madden NFL 25 ahead of its Aug. 16 release, there were quite a few surprises. Most notably, two of the league’s brightest young quarterbacks have surprisingly low ratings. After reviewing the ratings, here are the most overrated and underrated NFL quarterbacks in Madden.
Top 5 Most Overrated Quarterbacks in Madden NFL 25
Tua Tagovailoa – 88 Overall
Recently signing a four-year, $212.4 million deal, an average of $53.1 million per year, Tua Tagovailoa received an 88 overall, good for the sixth-best in the NFL. He was rated over Justin Herbert (87), Jalen Hurts (86), and Brock Purdy (85) among others.
According to TruMedia, however, Purdy in particular outperformed Tagovailoa last season. The 49ers’ starting QB had more touchdowns (33 to 29), fewer turnovers (13 to 19), and a better completion percentage (69.4% to 69.3%), and was much more accurate under pressure, as Tagovailoa’s completion percentage dropped to 40.7% when pressured as opposed to Purdy’s at 55.8%.
Aaron Rodgers – 83 Overall
At 40 years old, turning 41 later this season, Aaron Rodgers earned an 83 rating, placing him above the likes of Jared Goff, Matthew Stafford, C.J. Stroud, and others. This comes after Rodgers played just four snaps in 2024, suffering a torn Achilles.
While Rodgers has definitely had a legendary career, it’s still unknown how he will perform at his age following the type of injury he had.
Geno Smith – 78 Overall
While he isn’t particularly high overall, Smith earned a 78 rating that places him above both Trevor Lawrence and Kyler Murray. At 33 years old, Smith saw a career resurgence with the Seattle Seahawks, even leading the league in completion percentage in 2022.
However, Smith did not see that same success in 2023, seeing his completion percentage drop from 69.8% to 64.7%. According to TruMedia, Smith had fewer touchdowns and yards than Lawrence in addition to a worse completion percentage. Lawrence is also a greater threat with his legs, having 328 scramble yards as opposed to Smith’s 158.
Lamar Jackson – 98 Overall
This one was a tough one, but the NFL’s 2023 MVP received a 98 overall, good for second-best among quarterbacks. While it’s more than fair to rank him as the second-best quarterback, for Lamar Jackson’s rating to be this much higher than Joe Burrow’s (93) and Josh Allen’s (92) is a bit of a stretch.

Burrow suffered injuries throughout 2023 before his season ended, so his stats are hard to compare. Allen, however, did play the whole season and led the entire NFL in offensive touchdowns with 44, which is 15 more than Jackson’s 29. Allen also took 13 fewer sacks than Jackson.
Justin Fields – 75 Overall
Justin Fields is another quarterback with a rating not too high, but it’s about who he’s close to and rated over. At a 75 overall, he’s just two points lower than Lawrence and Murray and one point less than Caleb Williams and Russell Wilson. He’s also tied with Derek Carr and Deshaun Watson while being above Anthony Richardson.
Watson and Richardson’s seasons were both cut short due to injury, but Carr was significantly better than Fields. According to TruMedia, Carr was responsible for five more touchdowns, 699 more yards, two fewer turnovers, and a completion percentage seven points higher. Additionally, Carr is still a starter while Fields was traded away to be a backup.
Top 5 Most Underrated Quarterbacks in Madden NFL 25
Trevor Lawrence – 77 Overall
At 77 overall, even coming off a disappointing 2023 season, this is too low of a grade for Lawrence, especially considering he’s behind Baker Mayfield and Smith.
Despite suffering some late-season injuries that sent his season spiraling, Lawrence was responsible for leading the Jacksonville Jaguars to an 8-3 record. He finished the season with more touchdowns than Smith, a better completion percentage than both Smith and Mayfield, more rushing yards than both, and fewer sacks than Mayfield.
C.J. Stroud – 81 Overall
Arguably the most underrated quarterback in the game is Stroud, who is coming off winning Offensive Rookie of the Year and turning the Houston Texans into a playoff contender.

Stroud is ranked below both Rodgers and Kirk Cousins despite neither of those two finishing the season. In almost half the snaps (342 to 576), Cousins threw the same number of interceptions as Stroud (five) in the entire season.
Jordan Love – 81 Overall
Similar to Stroud, Jordan Love is also an 81 overall, below Rodgers and Cousins. For Love, though, he had the fourth most touchdowns in the NFL (36), and that was in just his first year of starting.
Josh Allen – 92 Overall
While a 92 is really high, it isn’t high enough for Allen, who led the NFL in touchdowns, as mentioned earlier. With Burrow not playing most of 2023 and Allen playing how he did, he has more than enough of an argument to be rated as the third-best quarterback in the game, and he even has an argument to be up there with Jackson.
Kyler Murray – 77 Overall
Finally, there’s Murray who is stuck at a 77. While he started the season hurt, Murray returned to action in Week 10. In his eight weeks of playtime, he was responsible for 13 touchdowns to just five turnovers. He also had 161 scramble yards, which was more than Stroud and Smith in the entire season.
