In the mid-morning hours Sunday, former NFL wide receiver Jacoby Jones was announced to have died at the age of 40. The cause of death is not known at this time, but with many colleagues and former teammates taking to social media to give their condolences to Jones and his family, news of his death spread quickly throughout the NFL world.

Former teammate and friend Torrey Smith took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and posted pictures of the duo together throughout the years, as well as writing a thoughtful goodbye to his friend.

Former teammate and NFL legend J.J. Watt was one of the first former teammates to take to social media as well and speak about Jones and their time together.

Jones was a third-round pick of the Houston Texans in the 2007 NFL Draft and enjoyed a nine-year NFL career. Stints included tenures with the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Diego Chargers.
He is best known for his time with the Ravens, where he enjoyed his most successful seasons, highlighted by the 2012 playoff run that included the “Mile High Miracle” that helped lift the Ravens to the Super Bowl as well as a kickoff return for a touchdown in the big game.
The NFLPA later put out a statement on behalf of the Jones family.
“We want to express our gratitude for all the kind thoughts and support you have shown us during this challenging time. Your ongoing support and respecting our privacy means a lot to us.
We are deeply saddened to share that Jacoby Jones, a beloved former Ravens football player from New Orleans and a proud graduate of a historically black college has passed away at the age of 40.
In a statement, the Jones family confirmed that Jacoby Jones passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana. The family, including his mother, Emily and his son, Little Jacoby, are together and are asking for prayers, privacy, and support as they navigate through this difficult time.”
