What Happened to Aaron Rodgers? Trade to New York Opened Path for Jordan Love

Aaron Rodgers was traded from the Packers to the New York Jets in 2023, paving the way for the Jordan Love era in Green Bay.

Aaron Rodgers, one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, was traded from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets in 2023. The trade allowed the Packers to start their 2020 first-round pick, Jordan Love, for the entire season as he led Green Bay to the 2023 playoffs.

Given his Hall of Fame career, why did the Packers take the bold step and trade Rodgers?

Aaron Rodgers Traded to New York Jets

After spending 18 seasons in Green Bay, Rodgers’ time as a Packer ended in April 2023, just days before the 2023 NFL Draft. The two front offices had been working on the trade details for weeks to get a deal done, and with the draft approaching, the trade was finalized.

The compensation, in the end, was amicable for both sides. The Jets got the QB they desperately desired. At the same time, the Packers were able to move on and begin a new era of Love under center while collecting extra capital.

Jets receive:

  • QB Aaron Rodgers
  • DL Will McDonald IV (2023 first-round pick, No. 15)
  • 2023 fifth-round pick (traded to Las Vegas)

Packers receive:

  • DE Lukas Van Ness (2023 first-round pick, No. 13)
  • TE Luke Musgrave (2023 second-round pick, No. 42)
  • K Anders Carlson (2023 sixth-round pick, No. 207)
  • 2024 second-round pick (conditional)

Given that Rodgers is seen as one of the greatest QBs of all time, some may think that the details of the trade were on the slim side for Green Bay. However, the feelings and circumstances around Rodgers and the Packers had soured.

It had become clear early in 2023 that Rodgers wasn’t going to play for Green Bay again.

On his regular bit on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers had made it clear that he intended to play for the Jets in 2023. Seen as he was still under contract with the Packers, this proved a problem.

Why Was Rodgers Traded?

For Green Bay, they either trade Rodgers to New York or let him retire. If they trade Rodgers, they know the potential haul is diminished.

The Jets knew that Rodgers was coming to them or not at all, meaning they controlled the negotiations. The alternative was for the Packers to simply refuse to trade Rodgers and let him retire. That would mean claiming back nothing in return for their biggest asset.

It took over a month to complete the negotiations, but Rodgers got his wish and became a Jet, kickstarting the Love era in Green Bay.

The Packers had been planning for this eventual moment for a few years. They drafted Love No. 26 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, even trading up to get him.

The pick surprised everyone, including Rodgers. “General reaction at first was surprise, like many people,” Rodgers told the media in 2020. “Not going to say I was thrilled by the pick.”

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst described the Love selection as a “long-term decision” to ESPN, but many see that moment as the start of the downfall in Green Bay.

The relationship between Rodgers and Gutekunst had gotten increasingly tetchy over the years, with the former wanting improved communication and a say in the direction the team was going and was unhappy with some of the moves.

Rodgers told The Athletic that, since 2020, the pair had spoken many times with the Packers organization about reassurances over communication on both sides.

The Rodgers era in Green Bay didn’t have its fairytale ending, but after sitting for two years, the Packers were finally able to evaluate what they had in Love.

In 2023, Love put up great stats and really came on strong in the second half of the season. In 17 games, he had 373 completions from 579 attempts and a completion percentage of 64.2%. He threw for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Love has shown enough in 2023 to give the Packers the impression that they have found another franchise QB to follow in the footsteps of Rodgers and Brett Favre before him.
