Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s Contract Details

Valdes-Scantling’s contract is a three-year, $30 million deal that includes $15 million in guarantees. His average annual salary is $10 million, and the contract contained a $6 million signing bonus. In 2023, Valdes-Scantling is set to count for $11 million against Kansas City’s salary cap, with a base salary of $8.56 million.

As a free agent, the Chiefs gave MVS the three-year, $30 million deal with $8.56 million guaranteed at signing and a further $6.44 million guaranteed for injury. That $6.44 million becomes fully guaranteed on March 17, 2023, giving Kansas City a window before then to decide what to do with the deal.

After a season in which he only posted two 100-yard games and has found the end zone just four times in the past 21 games, the Chiefs have an intriguing decision to make with Valdes-Scantling. If they release or trade him before the remaining money guarantees, they would be left with just $4 million in dead money — a cap saving of $7 million. However, after March 17, MVS will have a $10.66 million dead money value.
