The second wave of the 2022 NFL free agency period is off and running. As players continue to sign, predictions for free agent edge rusher Justin Houston continue to be discussed. Which NFL teams that need additional pass-rushing help could benefit the most from acquiring Houston in free agency?
Predictions for Justin Houston in 2022 NFL free agency
The edge rusher group was arguably the deepest of any position in the 2022 NFL free agency class. Even at age 33, Houston is still a desirable player. When the open market kicked off, Pro Football Network ranked him as the No. 36 free agent overall and eighth among pass rushers.
As more and more players sign, Houston should see his market increase as teams look to bring in a veteran presence. A four-time Pro Bowler, Houston played in 15 games for the Ravens last season and was credited with 40 total pressures, 17 QB hits, 4.5 sacks, a fumble recovery, and 34 tackles. Set to play on his fourth team in the last five years, what are our predictions for where Houston could play in 2022?
Los Angeles Rams
It was widely believed the defending Super Bowl champions would bring back Von Miller, especially given the success both saw last season. However, that was not the case. Miller signed a massive six-year, $120 million contract with the Buffalo Bills. Now, the Rams may look to fill his spot in free agency. One possible move could be signing Houston.
The former third-round pick appears to have plenty in the tank and can still win with his bend or straight power off the edge. It also helps that you could line him up alongside Aaron Donald. With all focus on No. 99, Houston could find it easier than ever to be a disruptor.
Green Bay Packers
It seems apparent Za’Darius Smith is unlikely to return to Green Bay. In fact, he was in Minnesota visiting the Vikings on Monday, which only rubs salt into the wounds of Packers fans. What do the Packers do now?
Green Bay has $19.48 million in cap space but also several other pressing needs, including wide receiver following their trade of Davante Adams. Houston could be brought in on a team-friendly deal if he wants to compete for a championship in his final seasons.
Bringing back CB Rasul Douglas was a big move. Now it’s time to make sure the pass rush can do its job. Houston could be just what the Packers need to retain their grip on the NFC North.
Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns are going all-in to win a title. They made this clear in the massive trade to acquire Deshaun Watson. What’s the next move? One of their strengths last season was their ability to generate pressure. Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney routinely played “meet at the QB,” combining for 17 sacks and 54 QB hits.
Garrett is going nowhere, but Clowney is a UFA seeking a substantial contract. If the Browns are unable to re-sign Clowney, Houston could be a backup plan for the team. While Houston might not be as disruptive as Clowney, he could bring consistency to the Browns’ defensive front as they chase not only an AFC North title but a conference championship.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Following Tom Brady’s un-retirement, the Buccaneers are back in “Super Bowl or bust” mode. It’s about getting as much talent as possible on their roster. After building a team on a ton of one- and two-year contracts, the Bucs have several gaps to fill, one being EDGE.
The decision to add Houston would hinge on Jason Pierre-Paul’s status. An unsigned free agent, Pierre-Paul played in 12 games but posted just 2.5 sacks in 2021, his fewest since 2015. Has age caught up? JPP is 33 years old, but unlike Houston, the case could be made he has lost a step. Tampa could opt to go with Houston on a team-friendly deal to give him the best shot he has ever had to capture that elusive Super Bowl ring.
