The Carolina Panthers have promoted defensive run game coordinator Al Holcomb to assistant head coach-defense, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.
Al Holcomb will have an expanded role with the Panthers
Holcomb, 50, will take on an expanded role working with the entire defense in building game plans, orchestrating game-day strategies, and collaborating with coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow.
A former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator, Holcomb was previously an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants.
The Browns hired Holcomb as linebackers coach and run game coordinator. During Holcomb’s first stint with the Panthers when Carolina reached the Super Bowl, he coached the linebackers and was a runner-up to Linebackers Coach of the Year award by Pro Football Focus.
Holcomb rejoined the Panthers in 2020 and was named defensive run game coordinator. He coached in the Senior Bowl all-star game last year.
He was a defensive quality control coach with the Giants and earned a Super Bowl XLVI ring. A former Temple graduate assistant, Holcomb, has also coached at Lafayette, Kutztown, and Colby College.
