Clemson’s struggles have turned what was once unthinkable into a serious conversation around the program. Dabo Swinney remains one of the most successful coaches in college football history, but recent results have made his future a much bigger topic than it was a year ago.
After a disastrous start to the 2026 season, prominent voices in the college football world are weighing in on whether Clemson needs a change.
Shannon Sharpe Points at Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Run Nearing an End
Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe believes Clemson and Swinney may have reached the end of their relationship.
During an episode of the “Nightcap” podcast with Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and Joe Johnson, the discussion turned to whether Clemson boosters could become involved if the Tigers’ season continues to go poorly. Sharpe offered a blunt assessment of Swinney’s position.
“Sometimes, it just runs its course. I think Dabo Swinney has run his course,” Sharpe said.
Joe asked whether Clemson would pursue a prominent replacement if Swinney were removed. Sharpe responded, “Oh, they’ll definitely try,” while Ochocinco questioned which available coach could attract top players.
The discussion comes after Clemson opened the season with a 51-10 loss to LSU, the worst defeat of Swinney’s full-time tenure. The Tigers were held to 145 total yards and went just 1-for-13 on third down, while LSU gained 644 yards and scored 51 consecutive points after Clemson’s early field goal.
The loss also intensified criticism surrounding Swinney’s approach to roster construction.
Clemson has historically emphasized high school recruiting while showing less willingness than other major programs to use the transfer portal and NIL opportunities.
However, Swinney expanded the program’s use of the transfer portal this year.

This philosophy has become increasingly difficult to defend after the Tigers finished 7-6 in 2025 and then opened 2026 with a blowout.
Swinney’s history, however, makes the situation more complicated than simply judging him by his recent results. He has a 187-54 record across 19 seasons at Clemson and guided the Tigers to national championships in 2016 and 2018. His teams also reached four College Football Playoff championship games during the program’s strongest stretch.
The financial side could make any immediate move difficult.

Clemson would owe Swinney a reported $57 million buyout if they fired him without cause, and his contract contains no mitigation provision. Clemson could actually save about $3 million by making the move during 2026 rather than waiting until January 1, 2027, when the remaining compensation rises to $60 million.
This leaves Clemson facing two very different realities: A coach with an extraordinary record and a program searching for answers after a steep recent decline.
