‘Counting the Days,’ ‘Hate What He’s Done To This Program’ — Wisconsin Fans Turn Up the Heat on Luke Fickell’s Head Coach Hot Seat

Wisconsin fans turn up the heat on Luke Fickell after the Badgers’ 41-13 loss to Notre Dame, raising fresh questions about his future.

The pressure on Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell intensified after the Badgers suffered a 41-13 loss to No. 4 Notre Dame in the Week 1 Shamrock Series matchup at Lambeau Field.

Wisconsin kept pace with Marcus Freeman’s Fighting Irish early, but Notre Dame pulled away after halftime and turned the game into a lopsided defeat, which quickly sparked frustration among the fan base. For many Badgers supporters, the loss only heightened concerns about the program’s direction under Fickell.

Wisconsin Fans Turn on Luke Fickell

Fickell entered his fourth season in Madison facing heaps of pressure after losing seasons, including a disappointing 4-8 record in 2025.

The Badgers brought in a heavily revamped roster and transfer quarterback Colton Joseph in an effort to turn things around, but were unable to get the job done against Notre Dame.

Wisconsin started well and kept the game close early, with a partially blocked punt helping the Badgers score first. Notre Dame eventually took control after halftime, outscoring Wisconsin 28-3 in the second half.

The Badgers also struggled to sustain their offense, as Colton Joseph threw one touchdown and one interception. The performance led to calls for Fickell’s job.

One fan suggested Fickell may already be running out of time, writing, “Luke Fickell is counting the days until they press the ‘GET OUT’ button on him!!”

Another predicted that Fickell could be gone before the season is over, writing, “Luke Fickell is getting fired before end of season.”

The frustration was not limited to one or two fans. Another person was even more direct about wanting a coaching change, saying, “I can’t wait for Luke Fickell to get fired so badly #Badgers.”

One die-hard questioned whether Fickell is the right person to lead the Badgers, arguing that the coach may be better suited to a coordinator role.

He said, “Luke Fickell is just not aggressive enough to be a head coach. Time for him to be in his element as the highest-paid DC and/or ST coach in the sport.”

Another fan expressed his disappointment with the direction of the program, saying, “Luke Fickell. I hate what he’s done to this program. How far back he’s set it.”

The criticism comes at a difficult time for Fickell, who entered the season knowing fans and national analysts would closely scrutinize his results after back-to-back losing campaigns.

Fickell acknowledged that Wisconsin had fallen short of its standard over the previous two seasons and said the Badgers needed to do a much better job in 2026.

The loss to Notre Dame has only increased the pressure on Fickell heading into the rest of the season. With Wisconsin already facing questions about the program’s direction, another stretch of poor results could intensify questions about his job security.
