After missing the entire 2025–26 season, Ben Simmons has agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Sacramento Kings. Simmons is now looking to establish himself with the Kings and potentially turn the short-term agreement into a longer stay.
While many see the minimum-level contract as a low-risk opportunity for Sacramento to add a versatile playmaker, much of the online reaction has focused on mocking Simmons’ fishing hiatus and questioning whether he can still become a meaningful contributor.

The Kings were reportedly exploring veteran options such as Russell Westbrook and Victor Oladipo before ultimately deciding to prioritize Simmons. The move gives the three-time All-Star another chance to prove that he can remain fit and contribute at the NBA level.
According to Andscape’s Marc J. Spears, Simmons is receptive to the possibility of staying in Sacramento beyond his one-year contract.
“One thing he likes about Sacramento is… he’s never played in a small market and sometimes that’s a safer haven,” per Spears. “You go to Sacramento, it’s about basketball. I’d put their fans up there with anyone in the world.”
After sitting out the entire 2025–26 NBA season, Simmons shifted his attention toward competitive fishing, and reportedly purchasing a controlling stake in the South Florida Sails Angling Club, giving fans plenty to talk about after Spears’ latest update.

“He’s my goat but it’s giving the feeling that he’s just back for the money,” a fan bashed Simmons.
During the 2024–25 season, Simmons split time between the Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets, averaging 5.0 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.7 rebounds across 51 appearances. As a result, several fans also shifted their attention toward whether Simmons could actually stay healthy and help Sacramento.

Simmons was once regarded as a dynamic playmaker and elite defensive presence during his prime with the Philadelphia 76ers. He showed glimpses his potential, winning Rookie of the Year and also earning an All-NBA selection during his Sixers tenure.
However, lingering back injuries continued to affect his play, forcing him to sit out for several games. Now, Simmons is expected to provide additional depth at point guard for the rebuilding Kings behind rookie Darius Acuff Jr.
Amid an anticipated comeback, Simmons’ former coach and longtime mentor, David Patrick, has raised expectations for the veteran guard, explaining that improved fitness has played a major role in helping Simmons rebuild the confidence that had dimmed during the most challenging periods of his career.
