James Cook III Fantasy Prediction 2026: The Last True RB1 Before the Round 1 Turn

James Cook’s production is overshadowed with regularity by his MVP-level QB, but fantasy football managers are well aware that he’s scored 32 touchdowns over the past two seasons. There is no question about what he can do, but where to slot him among the best in the game has been a hot topic this offseason, and I think there’s a pretty clear answer.

Should You Draft James Cook III in Fantasy Football?

As of early September, Cook’s ADP is 10.2, just outside the top 10, but PFN ranks him inside the top 10 with a ranking of eighth overall. His projected points per game this coming season is 19.1, just under 20 points per game, and his ranking is RB4 on PFN’s board.

He is a top-8 fantasy performer two years running, and in 2025, he led the NFL with 1,621 rushing yards. He was also third in attempts with 309, not the type of volume you would expect from a guy who’s 5’11” and under 200 pounds. But Cook is defying the initial prevailing assumptions that come with that archetype, and he’s thriving in the process as well. He averaged 3.0 yards before contact last year and 2.2 yards after contact, above average in both phases. He was fifth in rushing touchdowns with 12 on the season.

The past two years, Cook has achieved a staggering 5.4% touchdown rate on carries, and it still feels like there’s room for a positive regression as a receiving threat too. Even with the Bills’ new target competition in the fold, we’ve seen what Cook can do as a receiver. We know that he can accrue yards after the catch. He has a good route tree in that phase, but it still feels like there’s more meat on the bone, and that’s exciting. It’s a little trepidacious too, wondering if we are going to see that uptick, but the ability is absolutely there.

You also look at the schematic familiarity with Joe Brady at the helm, and the Bills have returned four of their five starters on the offensive line from last year. Cook is still one of the most adept and efficient runners and creators in the game, with a knack for pressing and weaving upfield even through tight spaces. Josh Allen’s presence alone forces defenses to respect both phases of the Bills offense and preserves space for Cook to operate and thrive.

In my opinion, the PFN rank is correct in being higher on Cook than the user ADP. He’s very much worth the investment as one of the last true RB1 opportunities before the round 1 turn. His ultimate PPR production still leaves you wanting at times, for sure, with the lacking receiving output. But Cook is one of the league’s most productive volume runners, defying his build in a scheme and situation that bodes well, and he is such a terrific value at his current rate.

James Cook III’s Week 1 Fantasy Outlook

I made it clear this offseason that I think Cook is special (Bold Fantasy Football Takes), and I feel good about that take.

Is the Houston matchup out of the gates favorable? 

Not at all, but he did rack up 116 yards and a score on the ground when these teams met a year ago, a performance that is even more impressive when you consider that Buffalo did little to demand respect through the air on that day (Josh Allen’s third-worst QB Impact grade of the season). 

Take a look under the hood and things check out. Despite the matchup, he posted his fourth-highest rate of 10-plus-yard carries for the season (17.6%) and was effective on first downs, when the run was most expected (10 carries for 42 yards).

You drafted Cook as a weekly difference maker, and I don’t think that’s out of the question in this spot. This isn’t an Allen solo act: this is an offense that realizes it has two players that can control tempo in any week.

With a career catch rate a tick under 80% (9.0 yards per catch across those four seasons), there isn’t a matchup or game script that makes me sweat when it comes to counting on Cook.
