Five months after Dianna Russini walked away from one of the most prominent NFL reporting jobs in the industry, her absence from sports media may be nearing its end.
Russini is reportedly exploring multiple opportunities and preparing for a return as the NFL season approaches. The timing received a significant boost Thursday when The Athletic finally released the findings of its lengthy investigation into whether her relationship with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel compromised her reporting.

“Russini is ‘absolutely’ planning a comeback to sports media, sources tell Front Office Sports,” wrote Michael McCarthy.
The former Athletic senior NFL insider has discussed several potential jobs, according to the report, with possibilities ranging from returning as a traditional football insider to shifting toward more of an opinionist or personality role.
She has not settled on her next destination. With the NFL regular season beginning Sept. 9, however, Front Office Sports reported that a decision could arrive sooner rather than later.

One possible landing spot is Barstool Sports. FOS identified Dave Portnoy’s company as a leading candidate, noting Russini’s existing relationships with “Pardon My Take” hosts Big Cat and PFT Commenter. Portnoy previously called hiring Russini a “no-brainer.”
That possibility represents a dramatic change from June, when Russini’s future in NFL media appeared far murkier. PFN previously covered the investigation while she was away from the industry, and The Athletic continued to examine her work.
Athletic Investigation Could Clear Path Back
Thursday’s findings did not completely absolve Russini.
The Athletic concluded that her undisclosed relationship with Vrabel represented a “clear violation” of its standards and should have been disclosed to editors. The review also criticized how Russini initially handled questions about photographs showing her and Vrabel together at an Arizona resort.

The journalism itself produced a notably different conclusion.
After examining 903 stories, 204 “Scoop City” podcast episodes, 77 videos, and additional appearances, investigators found no clear link showing Russini used her platform to promote Vrabel or his teams. Only about 5% of the reviewed written work involved Vrabel or teams he coached.
The outlet recommended editor’s notes on four pieces but found that the vast majority of Russini’s work raised no concerns.
Front Office Sports reported that those findings could “pave the way for her return.”
Russini resigned on April 14 after photographs of her and Vrabel created an intense public controversy. She stated in her resignation letter that she stood by her reporting and refused to let the episode define her career.
Nearly five months later, that career appears ready for another chapter.
The biggest question is no longer whether Russini wants to return to sports media. According to the latest reporting, she does. Now it is about which platform decides to give her the microphone.
