The Los Angeles Clippers did not take Wednesday’s NBA ruling lightly. Within minutes of the league announcing its punishment for salary cap circumvention, the organization fired back with a statement of its own.
The message left no doubt about where the team stands heading into what comes next.
Clippers Plan to Challenge NBA’s Harsh Punishment
The Clippers released a statement disputing the league’s findings following its year-long investigation into whether the team circumvented the salary cap in its dealings with Kawhi Leonard.

“We vehemently reject the NBA’s findings, which are the result of a heavily biased investigation seeking to justify a predetermined narrative rather than facts and evidence,” the Clippers said.
“What the league told us privately differs from what it announced today publicly, and they have not held themselves close to the standard Commissioner Silver set at the start of this investigation to ensure it’s fairness and accuracy. For the past year, we cooperated fully and in good faith and we will now fight just as hard to demonstrate our innocence.
“We intend to vigorously challenge these findings and penalties through every avenue available to us and look forward to an ethical and impartial arbitration process.”
The NBA’s ruling stripped the Clippers of five first-round draft picks, fined the organization $30 million, and issued suspensions for owner Steve Ballmer, president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank, and president of business operations Gillian Zucker.
Leonard himself was ordered to pay $700,000 in restitution. His uncle and former representative, Dennis Robertson, was banned from dealing with all NBA teams for the next five years. Leonard’s contract won’t be voided and he won’t be suspended.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that the Clippers’ only avenue to challenging this ruling is in court: “The NBA’s rulings are final — there is no formal appeal or arbitration process available to the Clippers with the league. LA’s only outlet to fight the punishment is in court.”
The investigation stemmed from a report last September by Pablo Torre alleging that Ballmer had made a $50 million personal investment in the now-bankrupt startup Aspiration. Torre alleged that Ballmer facilitated a no-show endorsement deal benefiting Leonard.
With the Clippers now vowing to fight the ruling, the saga that has hung over the franchise for the better part of a year appears far from finished. But Leonard will get a fresh start as his trade to the Toronto Raptors can now be finalized and he can put this saga behind him.
