“I want to be here the rest of my career.” That’s what Stephen Curry recently told NBC Sports Bay Area, and honestly, it doesn’t get much clearer than that. The Baby-Faced Assassin has already stated that he wants to stay in Golden State, plain and simple.
But when it comes to actually getting a new contract done, things aren’t quite so straightforward, and an NBA insider just shed some light on why.
NBA Insider’s Latest Revelation Regarding Stephen Curry
On the latest episode of “Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective,” insider Anthony Slater appeared as a guest alongside host Brian Windhorst and analyst Tim MacMahon.
Windhorst asked Slater about the current situation between Curry and the Warriors, and Slater explained that Golden State has taken a rather unusual approach.
Instead of going back and forth with Curry over specific contract terms, the Warriors have apparently laid out several possible paths for him. Curry can look at the different options available to him and decide which direction he wants to take.
“He can do one year max, or he can wait. And again, the Warriors have presented him with these options. One thing I will tell you from talking to people this weekend. They are adamant they are not negotiating with Steph Curry right now.”
“They are saying you can do this, you can do this, if you want the one-year max, if you want the two-year max, if you wanna wait. Like, here’s your menu. Pick off your menu,” Slater said during the segment.
Curry is entering the final season of his current deal with Golden State. He is scheduled to earn $62,587,158 during the 2026-27 campaign. He has already become eligible for another extension in late August. Now he can sign a maximum two-year extension worth around $136.7 million. That contract would keep him in a Warriors uniform through the 2028-29 season.
However, Curry’s age also plays an important role in determining what Golden State can offer him.
During the segment, Windhorst touched on the NBA’s old “Over-38 rule,” which now applies to Curry because of his age. The rule puts restrictions on how teams can structure contracts for older players, particularly when a deal could be used to shift salary into future seasons and create an advantage against the salary cap.
Still, the Warriors appear to have made their position clear. They want Curry back, but rather than pushing him toward one specific contract, they have given him choices. He can pursue a one-year maximum deal, take the two-year maximum extension, or wait and see what happens later.
