No. 14 seed Jovic locked horns with Magdalena Fręch in her opening match at the US Open. The clash unfolded in a closely contested fashion, with both players securing two breaks apiece.
As Jovic led 4-3, Fręch won a crucial point in her service game to level the score at 4-4 after the American’s movement was compromised because she slipped on the court amid the light drizzle.
Jovic promptly approached chair umpire Aurélie Tourte to ask whether the point could be replayed, explaining that the slip had hindered her ability to play her shot. The 18-year-old appeared frustrated as Tourte ruled that the point could not be replayed, explaining that she would have needed to raise concerns about the court before the point began.
“You saw me. I literally, I didn’t even run for the ball,” Jovic said.
“I know but we cannot replay for that,” Tourte said.
“But I can stop?” the 18-year-old asked.
“You cannot stop during the rally. I can check before we start the point. But once we start the point, we cannot replay,” Tourte responded.
The American appeared baffled by the decision and asked the chair umpire again whether she was sure the point could not be replayed. Tourte confirmed her ruling but said she would check the weather forecast before calling for a resumption of play.
“We’re just going to wait and I’m going to check the forecast,” the umpire said.

The match was ultimately suspended with the score tied at 4-4, as the worsening weather forced several matches on the outer courts to be postponed overnight. Jovic and Fręch will have to return to the Grandstand on Wednesday, September 2, to complete their encounter.
If Iva Jovic triumphs over Magdalena Fręch when their match resumes, she will take on either Francesca Jones or Magda Linette in the second round of the US Open. The American could then face her close friend Alexandra Eala in the third round, provided Eala beats Oleksandra Oliynykova.
