Reggie Swinton Points to Money Behind Browns’ QB Decision
Former Cowboys wide receiver Reggie Swinton believes Sanders faced a difficult path because of Watson’s contract and the financial commitment attached to him.
Swinton reshared a post featuring Emmitt Smith’s comments, arguing that Smith’s story about his own Cowboys career supported his view of the Browns’ quarterback situation.
Smith, who played alongside Swinton in Dallas, was asked about Swinton during a media appearance. The Hall of Fame running back praised his former teammate’s ability but also explained why talent did not always translate into playing time.
“He was a very talented player. I thought he was one of our better wide receivers,” Smith said.

Smith then pointed to several factors that can determine whether a player gets opportunities, including consistency, durability, and the team’s commitment to using him. He also discussed the financial decisions that can shape a roster.
“But in the football world, financial situation has a way of dictating who gets on the football field,” Smith said. “And unfortunately for Reggie, he had guys that the Cowboys brought in as free agents that they had to make sure were on the football field.”
Smith recalled Swinton making difficult catches and producing during practices, while also contributing on special teams. His comments gave Swinton a direct connection to the argument he now makes about Sanders.

Swinton took that message to X after Smith’s remarks, writing, “When I told yall that Deshaun Watson got the job over Shedeur because of money, yall didn’t believe me. Well, Emmitt Smith told the same story about why I didn’t get a fair shot… it was because of money.
“The NFL is not about winning its about who they are paying big money to.”

The Browns, who ranked last in PFN NFL Offense Impact for 2025, owe Watson $46 million in fully guaranteed money for the final year of his five-year, $230 million contract. That financial commitment has raised questions about whether the team could realistically turn to Sanders, even if the rookie impressed at times during the quarterback competition.
Sanders is expected to begin the season behind Watson on Cleveland’s depth chart.
The Browns will open the 2026 regular season against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 13 at EverBank Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
